1. Howdy guys and gals! I've been a reader of these awesome forums for some months now, but I finally decided to make an account, as I felt a strong urge to share my latest project with the world. Short introduction about myself as this is my first post. I'm a 19 year old student, currently living in Bærum, Norway. Hookah has been a hoppy of mine for about two years I guess. As the availability of hookahs here up nort in Norway is not very great, I decided that I would not buy my third pipe, but build it myself. So I found my paper and pencil and started scetching. This hookah is mostly built out of tubes and pipes you normally use in your bathroom, but together with some other everyday objects, I've turned it into a hookah I can be proud of. I tried to take as many photographs in could during the assembly proccess, so here we go! First, the hoses. Originally I planned three hoses for the hookah, but later I had to do some design changes due to parts not fitting as I intended, so the final result does only have two hoses. The following pictures were taken before I knew any of this, so here you'll see all the three hoses being assembled. Here you see all the parts needed for one hose yet to be assembled. And here follows some pictures of the finished hoses. Next is some pictures of the hoses attached to the pipe going down to the smoke chamber. At the bottom of each pipe, you can see a ball valve working as an "on/off" switch for each hose. Next thing was to seal the top of these pipes, as I've done here. Then I fixed the holes in the base lid (well, it's actually my friend in the picture, starring as an up and coming hookah model ), so the pipes could go through easily. Then I started cutting the pipes for the stem (Yes, that is me in the picture). Then all the parts were ready for us to assemble. And..............(drum roll) Here is the final result (well, not final, as I made some changes to the base today and switched the tape holding the pipes together at the top with a real metal clamp, one picture down and you'll see v2.0). And here is how it looks today, after the changes I made. I am very pleased with the final result. The hookah is 100% air tight, and the ball valve system works perfectly. I was stupid enough to forget my camera when we smoked it today, so I've got no smoke pictures yet. But I will publish them after the next time I smoke. I must say thou, it was legendary. The hookah smoked way better than every hookah I've ever owned. Please tell me what you think. Happy smoking, Fredrik/Hexagonmaster

 3. This weekend I had the pleasure of smoking with some of the coolest people I have ever met. What makes this event special is they are members of this forum and this weekend would not have been possible had I not taken the time to join and get my voice out there. While I started here as a lurker and only planned on staying long enough to learn to properly smoke hookah, I am glad I changed my mind. Spending time with seasoned smokers was far more rewarding and beneficial to my sessions than merely browsing varied opinions. What makes Hookah Forum a wonderful place is not "hookah," but rather the collection of kindhearted, welcoming, and often hilarious individuals that make this place home. So even if you do not feel like posting, feel free to PM a member in your area to get together and smoke, or join us on chat sometime, or really make my day and respond to this thread. The point is, what you get out of the site is reliant on what you put in. Anyways, I hope to see some new faces around here. Jess : )

 7. The stars are member ratings. Not really sure how that all works. The reputation is what you see at the bottom right of everyone's posts. It used to be + and -, but we took away the - because a member was abusing it hardcore, targeting one member. The reputation system is used if you really like a member's post or find it really helpful. To see someone's reputation rating, go to their profile. Hope that clears it up for ya.

 12. Chris let me tell you something about relationships. The OG might not be the newest thing, yeah there are hotter, younger pipes on the market, but if you let her go she will always be the one that got away. True her beauty marks may be looking like flaws right now, and hell maybe she doesn't get all done up for you anymore and instead just sits there looking dull tarnished on a Friday night. Maybe her curves just aren't as sexy as you remembered them, or maybe its that when you are in the mood there are other pipes you call on instead, pipes that do wild things your OG wouldn't even dream of! But if you move on and she finds a new home, you will regret it! She is the pipe you want to wake up next to in the morning, she was there through good sessions and bad. Through new vases and broken bowls. She may not have the tightest of holes, but man can still put out clouds like she did back in the day (and she lasts all night). Chris, there will always be the new thing, but there is only one OG. So next time you find your self in the mood and start reaching for one of your younger stems, take a second look at old faithful. And maybe, just maybe, she might surprise you. (sell me the syrian instead)

 13.
Myth : Poking holes in the middle of the foil on a phunnel makes for a better smoke. Status: Busted! Reason : Because with the hole being right above the hole in the downstem pieces of ash tend to get into the stem alot easier. Why is this bad those little pieces of ash sometimes end up in your hose or your mouth. And no one likes ash in their mouth. And yes even if holes arent directly above the hole ash will still go down the stem. But not as much. Next week : Can you light a natural coal using just 1 ql and does it affect the taste of the natural.
This would be a good idea, however your first example is already inaccurate. I'd hate to think what other myths you'd try and "bust". Eric, President/Creator/BigWig of Tangiers, recommends poking holes all over the foil (to include over the spire). I don't agree with his theory that it's better in general, however I do agree that it reduces the risk of overheating a bowl due to coal inactivity. It seems that having holes over the spire gives the heat a way to escape. Thus, if you were to leave your coals unattended for an extended period of time, there's less chance of the bowl overheating. Every time I've been to the lounge, Eric is usually multi-tasking or pre-occupied with other activites besides smoking. His pipe sits idle for quite some time. This is why I think Eric suggests using holes over the spire, but that's just speculation on my part. Also, you mentioned that having holes over the spire would cause someone to possibly inhale ash. If the ash was able to travel down the stem, through the water, float back into the chamber and through the hose - into your mouth...then it's probably possesed by some hookah demons or charcoal gnomes. Poking holes isn't going to stop it. If you do get some grit in your mouth, it's probably rust.

We were looking at classes to sign up for and she mentions this class that debates Star Wars vs. Star Trek. I totally believed it cause our school actually has classes like that in the Film Studies and Literature departments. Like there's a class for Harry Potter for crying out loud. So I believed her and told her I wouldn't mind taking it; sounded like an easy class. Then she busted me out. She then felt bad cause she could tell I was kinda excited.
Nerd.

The lighting test has been over several days. I wanted each set of coals to be the first lit of the day. Al Fakher – Flipped when lighting at 4:30 minutes; done at 7:20 minutes. Coals sent floating sparks when flipping. +2 Points CH – Flipped when lighting at 4 minutes; done at 6:10 minutes. Coals sparked when flipping. +4 Points Shishaco is a fast lighting coal for coconut coals. CHis a close second but those new cocos take a lot longer, because of the new cube shape. Smell of lighting is important to me. Don’t want my house smelling like coal. Al Fakher – Smells like quicklights when lighting. +2 Points CH – Just awful. Smells like something from my days in the oil field. +1 Point Coconara – Slight coal smell. +4 Points Shishaco – Smells like Exoticas. +3 Points Coconara’s are the clear winner on this one. CH is the very worst. They just smell completely awful. Al Fakher isn’t much better. Round 08 – Smell – During Smoking This compares the smell of the coals during the session. I like to smell the shisha not the coal. I like it when people come over and can smell what I am smoking not what I am using to cook the shisha. Al Fakher – There is slight smell throughout the session. +1 Point CH – Little smell, but not much, disappeared after 10 minutes or so. +3 Points Coconara – No smell. +4 Points Shishaco – There is a slight smell but it disappears after I flipped the coals. +2 Points Really most of the smells while smoking isn’t bad at all, but Coconara has none so they are the clear winner. Round 09 – Taste This is an obvious one. One of the main reasons I switched to natural coals was to get rid of the coal taste when I smoke. Al Fakher – You know for a coconut coal it has a very coal taste. +1 Point CH – There is slight taste, but less than compared to the best quicklights. +3 Points Coconara – No taste. +4 Points Shishaco – There is a slight taste like exoticas have at the end of the bowl. But it starts off there and get’s lighter through the session. +2 Points I know my taste buds are a little more in tune to coal taste. Especially after smoking quicklights for 5 years. Some may not even notice what I taste. Coconaras is a clear winner. CH is my second best. Al Fakher was a sever disappointment for coconut coals. Round 10 – Longevity One of the key elements of any coal to compare, how long will they last? This round is for full coals on a normal session of normal heat management. Al Fakher – Lasted 61 minutes before the coals became too small to smoke well. +2 Points CH – Lasted 59 minutes before the coals became too small to smoke well. +1 Point Coconara – Lasted 90 minutes before the coals became too small to smoke well. +4 Points Shishaco – Lasted 62 minutes before the coals became too small to smoke well. +3 Points Despite their new size Coconara’s is a clear front runner. The rest are very close race as you can see. Round 11 – Ash This compares the ash. White ash (Lighter Ash) means less fillers, the darker the ash and color tint mean more fillers. Also how the ash acts on the bowl, falling off or staying in place and insulating the heat. Al Fakher – Marble Gray with greenish tint. Ash falls all over the bowl. +1 Point CH– Stone Gray. Ash stays in place with the coals. +3 Points Coconara – Very Light Gray. Ash stays in place with the coals. +4 Points Shishaco – Concrete Gray with Dark Colors. Ash falls off sporadically. +2 Points Coconara wins this round again, but by a narrow margin if the ash was a little lighter it would have won. Al Fakher is the worse of the lot, they ash like crazy and get all over the bowl, Shishaco are not much better in my opinion. Round 12 – Heat Management This round is to determine the ease of heat management. When do you normal do the flip coals and a windcover and the overall ease of managing the coals to keep good consistent smoke going throughout the session. Al Fakher – Flipped at 17 minutes. Flipped at 28 minutes. Windcover at 35 minutes. A little work. +1 Point CH – Flipped at 20 minutes. Windcover at 30 minutes. Flipped at 40 minutes. All in all pretty effortless. +3 Points Coconara – Flipped at 40 minutes. Added Windcover at 55 minutes. All in all a complete breeze. +4 Points Shishaco – Flipped at 20 minutes. Flipped at 40 minutes and added windcover. All in all pretty effortless. +2 Points Well Coconara wins the prize, which is great for me because I forget about the coals sometime. –1 Point CH offers a quicklight version of their Coconut Charcoals which is an exclusive to this brand. +1 Point Coconara – First to market with coconut coals. Got to give credit to the pioneers. +1 Point Final Tally This finally tally is the comparison of all the factors I think are important in comparison. Some of these rounds may not even come into the factoring of your choice of coals. Some may look at Longevity as a deciding factor, or price, or smell may be off putting. My additional considerations may also not factor into your decision also, but I think they are worth noting. So my FINAL TALLY is the culmination. I hope this whole experiment may help you make the choice of Coconut coals for you. 22. So I saw a thread about smoking in your car, and since I frequently drive 3 hours to WCU and smoke the whole way there, I thought I'd post some tips for a fun, safe car trip. (Note: I do not claim to be an expert on state laws, all information here is provided from experience and is not intended as legal advice. Moderators are free to remove this post if it is in violation of any of the forum rules) 1. Smoking hookah in your car is, as far as I have found, not illegal. I was pulled over in Boone with a lit hookah in my car. I told the cop what it was, what was in it, and not to touch it because it was hot. He said it was not illegal. It's a tobacco pipe, and unless they have changed something, you can smoke any kind of tobacco pipe in your car. NC law states that an officer of the law cannot confiscate a hookah unless he can confirm the presence of marijuana. It cannot be considered paraphernalia unless the presence of marijuana can be detected. This has been corroborated by many police officers, security guards, and highway patrolmen that I have asked about this while smoking in public places, but may not be accurate. Now that we have that out of the way and my butt is sufficiently covered... 2. I have found that cracking the driver side window about an inch will keep the car from getting hazy. The air blows past the window, but not into it, which will create a slight vacuum and suck the smoke out the window. Also, if you must turn your heating/air conditioning on, only use the vents that blow on your feet. Otherwise, the airflow will spoil your clouds and mess up your window-vacuum. 3. If you have a hookah specifically designed for the car, like the Leila, awesome. If you are using a standard hookah, you have options. Use a small one and try to get it in the center console. I used the Mya Gelato when I didn't have my Leila. Or, if you're riding with a friend, get your tallest hookah with the widest base and set it on the floor between the passenger's feet. This will help keep it from tipping over, and the height of the stem will let your friend or relative hold it steady. 4. When you set up the bowl of a standard hookah in the car, think safety first. (That was kind of a no-brainer, but still.) I usually make a lip around the bowl out of aluminum foil, about 2 inches high. This helps keep the coals from moving about, or sliding off the bowl and on to my floor. I also frequently add a wind cover, for extra extra safety. Also, check to make sure the bowl doesn't wobble on the grommet, as this can lead to disaster. 5. There is no easy way to light coals in a moving vehicle, especially quicklights. Pull over, open your door, and hold the coal out. I have used the cigarette lighter that came with the car to light quicklights before, but I had to hold the lighter in the socket for about 3 seconds after it pops. Most cigarette lighters automatically 'pop' partially out of the socket when they are hot enough, but this is usually only hot enough to light a cigarette, not a coal. 6. Keep stocked with a flavour you don't mind smoking with warm water. I personally like Starbuzz Caramel Apple and Caramel Macchiatto, as well as other cinnamon, chocolate, coffee, and mint flavours. That's pretty much it. I've smoked in my car for about 2 years now, and I haven't really had any mishaps other than a burnt bowl of Starbuzz Black Grape, but then again that flavour ALWAYS seems to burn, no matter how I try. I hope this helped some people out!

 24. That's a nice hookah for sure! The KM Kamanja Wheat is a solid pipe and will smoke like a champ! I know this, because I had one ------------ Khalil Mamoon hookahs have model names given by KM. However, they are not written anywhere, on any box. That may have been done for an importer so that they could quickly take inventory of their merchandise, rather than hand inspect every stem. Most vendors re-name the models to their liking. If you look at all your favorite websites to buy KM's, you will see the same model hookah with multiple different names....some don't even have names and are simply called "2011 Quad Tone". I am sure KM didn't put 2011 Quad Tone on a box in Arabic for a vendor to roughly translate to English. That hookah (the newer version Tri-metal that is oxide) is called the Alem El Misr by KM. Also, do you think they called the OG-Tri, the OG-Tri? Some models, such as the Kamanja have the same names from KM as they do here in the USA. With the Kamanja, there are so many different styles, we as vendors use terms such as Wheat, Star, Laser Engraved Wheat, Double Wheat, etc to distinguish them from one another. The one in question here, is a Kamanja Wheat. I am assuming it is called "Frost" because of the vase choice this vendor has chosen to pair up with the KM stem. So the truth of the matter, yes, of course KM has names for their hookahs. However, they are rarely kept once they are for re-sale.

I somehow have a specification which is the outermost certain small grape. even I took once a small diligently speaker crammed into the vase of rank coal banana mouth taste when falling from the sky. Whatever cause is the grape with foul banana grommet no typewriter. If small is the banana then the smoke must be a certain level. When level is the grape then specifications of the water are huge number smoke.

 33. So, you're probably in one of the following situations: you're in a hookah bar and about to order some Starbuzz (SB), you've finally broken down and paid the "premium price" for a "premium tobacco," or you actually happen to like SB. Either way, there are a few things that one must know to get the amazing SB session that so many people rave about in order to justify the ~$18-$22 cost per 250g.

Starbuzz is made for an egyptian bowl. Yes, it can be annoying when juicy tobaccos leak juice into the holes and down the stem; however, this can be avoided by light dabbing the tobacco with a paper towl before packing it. Note: do not try to wipe off the juice, that will ruin the amount of smoke and flavor that SB can achieve. When you pack SB into an egyptian, do not press down on it at all, you should do what many people call "fluff packing" so that the air flow is simple without having to over-pull. Make sure when you're poking holes through the foil that you poke all the way down and THEN turn the bowl over and push the poker through the holes from the bottom up, this ensures you will have easy air flow.

Before you pack your bowl, make sure you stir the tobacco thoroughly! If your SB has been sitting for more than a few hours, the juices will have seperated and once you make a bowl out of a seperated batch, there is no chance to get the proper distribution of juices back.

Starbuzz is, ironically, not a tobacco to smoke if you're looking for a buzz. If you like the "hookah buzz" that many brands offer, I recommend mixing similar flavors of your favorite buzz brand. I have found that SB mixes best with Fusion, Romman, Al Fakher, and Mizo Nakhla. Brands I found it to not mix well with are Tangiers, Fumari, and OG Nak. Fumari and OG Nak probably will work if you find the right proportions, I was not able to.

It is possible to smoke SB out of a vortex or phunnel type bowl but know this will not yield the best results. Phunnel bowls are second to an egyptian in bowl choice but often lead to a slight loss of flavor, again, pack SB in a fluff method. Avoid using a vortex for SB in all cases.

When deciding on coals, I cannot stress this enough, that SB is a LOW HEAT TOBACCO using too much heat, while yielding bigger clouds, will burn the tobacco and give you diminishing returns as the session goes on. Personally, I use 2 CH QL coals on opposite sides of my bowl and rotate around. Do not ever put a coal in the center of the bowl. Ever. When setting up the foil, you should have roughly 50 holes on the bowl for an average sized egyptian.

There are many flavors that SB makes; however, you can find a lot of them done better in other brands. It is not worth paying the premium dollar for a flavor that can be bought for much cheaper, and taste/perform better. Just because you like a brand does not mean it has the best everything. Below I will go through the flavor list and point out better or "just as good as" flavors from other brands. Conversely, there are some flavors that you will not find made better by any other brand.
Apple Cinnamon Best Apple Good Single Apple. No Anise. The only competition for Tangerine Dream is Fusion's Mandarin which I like better but others might prefer SB Tangerine Dream.

For the average egyptian bowl, depending on the coals and amount of hits you take, each set of coals should last you roughly 45 min. If you properly rotate the coals around the edge of the bowl your average bowl of SB should last you slightly over 2 hours. As you become more familiar with SB you can make a bowl last up to 4 hours with better packing methods, better quality coals, and proper heat managment. Starbuzz smokes best with room temp or warm water in the base, as it is already a smooth smoke, ice and cold water are not needed to reduce harshness, the warmer the water is, the more intense the flavor will be.

Last but not least, if you have issues, ASK SOMEONE FOR HELP. DISCLAIMER: I know that the flavor comparisions I posted, not everyone will agree with. I simply wanted to offer an opinion from someome who has smoked every Starbuzz flavor made as well as many of the same flavors in other brands. There is likely to be better similar flavors in other brands than I have listed.

See this just doesn't make sense.. You're willing to invest $400 into something, but at the thought of spending $12 for a new funnel (most vendors have discount code that would negate shipping and then some.) you just can't be bothered? That's like building out an entire $400,000 house, and forgetting to install a hallway closet, and just saying fuck it and selling it for pennies on your dollar. I'm really trying to sympathize for you man, but this is blown out of proportion.

 36. If it works the same way it does on this other forum I visit, then positive reputation can be given to member for helpful posts or good advice. Positive reputation given adds points to your 'rep power', negative detracts from it. The more rep power you have, the more your positive/negative reps count when hitting the +/- buttons.

I have HUNDREDS of coals JUST LIKE YOU in the cupboard. What, you think I'm scared to light some new ones up? Test me, motherfucker. I double dog dare you." and they usually just stay in place.

 48. So I've been thinking lately about just how much and why I love Hookah Forum. This is a great community that I've taken part in for the past 2+ years. Adrock gave us something very simple in its day, and it has blossomed into this incredible place. Sure, it has had its ups and downs, slow times and busy times. That is the nature of forums. I have no doubts it will continue on strong. Huge thanks to Mushrat for running this place. His leadership is the best I've ever seen on all of the forums I've ever signed up on. I also appreciate him giving me the opportunity to moderate this fine forum. To me, it didn't boost my ego or put me on a powertrip. Quite the opposite, actually. It made me more humble. I feel that I am now a better person because of it. I know it's just a forum and it's just the internet and doesn't matter as much as "real life," but that's how I feel. I feel the World Wide Web has grown so extensively that it is now a part of real life- I always tell people now to think before you type something, because you might as well be yelling it out in public. And also once it's typed, it's archived forever. Anyway, thank you Mush and the other mods who had a part in giving me this opportunity to give back to the community. I greatly appreciate it. The members here are great. The knowledge is top notch and I still learn something new everyday. I'm glad I stumbled upon this forum when seeking wisdom about my new hobby. I've seen members here help each other out in so many ways. People (mainly Jay, haha) have helped me out when in tight spots. I try to do the same, now that I am more in a position to do so. I guess you could call it paying it forward. And this place is great at it. It truly makes me happy to see a forum where people who were once complete strangers become friends and help each other out in so many ways. I've gotten to know the people here so well that I can say a lot of you are my friends. Most people who I know in "real life" wouldn't understand that, but I don't care. I'm proud to call you guys my friends and I hope I have been a pretty decent friend to you guys as well. I don't know why, but I just felt the need to post this. This place is more than just an online community; it's a home. And I am proud to call Hookah Forum my home. Thank you, Hookah Forum.
