1.
The second scenario, one I've been experimenting with a lot lately, involves a relatively small number of larger holes around the outside edge of a phunnel bowl packed loose and full. (Of course, there are variations of this but I'm using this specifically to illustrate my point.) In this case, heated air is pulled in from the holes around the outside of the bowl, through the tobacco mass, and down the center. The goal here is to expose more tobacco to more air leading to thicker smoke, better flavor, bowl longevity, and less wasted shisha.
When you speak about this second scenario, do you overpack the bowl when you pack it loose? I mean do you pack it above the rim of the bowl, but loose? Otherwise I couldn't see how that should work, because there would be a gap between the foil and the tobacco, so the air wouldn't really be pulled through it. Anyways, like Mushrat said, the tobacco which does not get in contact with air is extremely well heated by the phunnel itself, since its material conducts the heat very well. But you are right, too, evenly distributed airflow in the bowl should be beneficial. But in a phunnel bowl, I think this is harder to achieve than in an egyptian!
2. So in a Phunnel Bowl, a tighter pack would always be the better choice? Because there can't be any restriction to the air flow AND the tighter the pack/the less air between the tobacco, the better the conduction is? Did I geht that right?
3. Hey folks When I pack my phunnel bowl I always pack it more or less tight, not as tight as I pack tangiers and nakhla (those ones I pack REALLY tight, nakhla even more than tangiers). So when I pack AF, I pack it a bit below the rim, patting it down so there are really no gaps in the tobacco and it smokes well. But it uses up a lot of tobacco. Thats why I want to get away from that technique when smoking Starbuzz etc. Do you think I could also just sprinkle the tobacco in the phunnel, filling it a bit below the rim too, but having a lot of gaps in the tobacco? Is the dense pack even necessary when I am not smoking tangiers or nakhla?
4. That sounds reasonable, the tangiers funnel conducts the heat very well, I noticed that too. So that seems to make a mod more or less useless I guess When I first picked a funnel, I thought "how the hell should that work?", cause I was used to the egyptian bowls.
5. It also forces the air to flow through the tobacco. I thought perhaps that might make a difference!
6. Hey folks Do you think a mod used with a funnel does improve the flavour, making it more intense?
7.
ok, so interesting thing happened today. i got my package from ss (!) and my roomies and i lit up a bowl of baja blue. we had our water level up about an inch over the stem (35" km pear), and maybe 10 minutes in, the smoke hadn't gotten very thick, and one of my buddies got impatient and decided to add ~1/2 cup (1-1.5") of water to the base. the very next pull, we started getting huge, thick clouds that continued throughout the rest of the session maybe there's less room in the base, so the smoke is more dense? or it could've been that the smoke cooled off more due to the extra water but yea, i've tried altering water levels before and have never seen such a drastic change
I don't see how that would make any sense Just don't see any logic behind that!
8. I was just thinking that the tobacco might not be able to unfold all its flavour because of the way a phunnel bowl works. The air you are inhaling just did not float thorugh the tobacco, it just "touched" it. Otherwise I think eric put a lot of time in developing this bowl so he might have been thinking about this a lot When I first saw a phunnel bowl I thought "wtf, how the hell should that work?". But it smoked
9. Hey Guys Is it just me, or does a Phunnel lower the intensity of flavour while smoking? Perhaps thats the result of how the tobacco gets heated up and how the air flows through the bowl? I mean in a standard bowl, the air flows through the whole tobacco, whereas in a Phunnel bowl it doesn't. Could that be a possible reason?
10. Because in an egyptian bowl, the the air floats through the whole tobacco, while in a funnel it just touches the surface an the tobacco is heated up more by the bowl itself.
11. Should I pack it below the rim of the bowl? Or above it? thanks!
12. Are they shaped like cocobricos but smaller?
13. Could you guys add a pic of the two in comparison. Would be great!
14. Package looked good! Ok then I'll leave the tub open, thanks! Gonna report how it worked!
15. When putting it in the freezer, should the tub be closed?
16.
And its correct...the juicier a tobacco is, the looser it should be packed.
Loose, but still in contact with the foil? Would you say that?
17. Hey About 2 Weeks ago, I got 2 bricks of OG Tangiers, New Lime and Summer Solstice. Now, New Lime smelled excellent right out of the package, but summer solstice gave me no hint of melon/guava, just soy/bbq sauce smell. I acclimated it a lot, like 4 hours open, 20 closed, even about 10-15 hours open, stirred it up now and then, but the smell didn't even change a tiny bit. Until now it acclimated over 40-50 hours. Is there something else I can do?
18. So as a conclusion: You can smoke every tobacco touching the foil, but you have to consider if you pack it loosely or densely, depending on its wetness. Would you say that by your own experiences tobacco touching the foil positively impacts the intensity of the flavour?
19. Hey there Since I am smoking Tangiers for a few weeks now I am asking myself if it would make any sense to smoke other tobacco brands with the same traditional packing, aka tobacco gets in touch with the foil, no space between tobacco and foil. Before I started smoking tangiers, I mostly packed my funnel bowl to a bit below the rim, added a sheet of foil and poked small holes (none over the funnel itself). Do you think it would make sense to overpack other brands (besides nakhla)? If so, which ones? Do you think it would work with Jm's, Starbuzz etc?
20. Thanks so far, I'm gonna try it out later today.. I will add more fresh tobacco to the old one which is already in the bowl (so not mixing them before). @webbles yea I am still learning packing it and I don't want to waste too much tobacco! By the way, do you guys use warm water when smoking tangiers? Would you appreciate it?
21. Hey Folks Is it possible to reuse tangiers that was already in the bowl, but not burned? So I pull off the burned top layer of the tobacco, mix the old but still juicy one with unused tobacco and pack a new bowl? I mean the tobacco is juicy, but it was at least heated up!
22. doesn't a lot of juice run down the stem since the tobacco is covering the holes? I want to try a vortex bowl too, but thats what I am asking myself
