I really hope this thread is an elaborate trap to get names for a social cleansing list.

QUOTE (liquidglass @ Oct 5 2009, 03:27 PM) QUOTE (gaia.plateau @ Oct 5 2009, 05:06 PM) i just want to say that my request that the lockerz thread be closed until further review was 100% merely messing with liquidglass. i picked it at random without the slightest idea what it was. Oh I see how it is hmmmmm, pick on the new mod Just testing if anyone could get threads closed simply by asking -
QUOTE (rhineholt @ Oct 5 2009, 03:19 PM) I'm not into that whole drinking scene It strikes me that you confess this without considering the gravity of its implications. This is the equivalent of stating that you are not into that whole fucking scene, or that whole music scene, or that whole breathing scene.

i have absolutely no experience or training with this stuff. but these people say these are the best pictures ever taken of them. i don't know about light or shadow or anything like that but i thin the perspectives are pretty good. they're all taken with shitty early gen digi compacts. hydroponics farm one was taken on a disposable. i really like the first one, i was with some friends at a lucha libre fight in the really sketchy area of guatemala city. my buddy ryan just happened to be wearing the same incredibly obscure swedish death metal band shirt as the wrestler: the fifth or sixth most random thing i have ever seen in guatemala.

is there a disadvantage to using IS?
-
i recognize you as an authority. i am comfortable with considering your imagination of what sorts of lenses would be useful as solid evidence. sooo fucked right now.
-
Edit: Addendum: I've heard of IS lenses, but I don't know what they are. What are they? I guess I'll need to make sure that I get it. Cos I'll never be using a tripod. So what are they?

QUOTE (chinamon @ Oct 5 2009, 01:16 PM) QUOTE (gaia.plateau @ Oct 5 2009, 12:52 PM) I think I'll decide on the more rugged series by Canon, to eliminate an overabundance of choices. good choice. i find that the sensors and bodies by canon and nikon are all top quality so its a tough competition between the two. however, canon glass is definitely better than nikon glass so canon ftw. i think you mentioned that you want to shoot sports. when it comes to sports you will want a lens that has a long focal length (70-200mm or longer depending on the sport) and fast (wide aperture). dont forget to factor in the 1.6X crop if you are not getting the 5d or 1d or 1ds. also when shooting with telephoto you will want a lens that has IS if you arent using a tripod. i think its always good to have IS even if there is a tripod being used. expect to spend as much on the lens as the body itself but that depends on which body you choose. Not sports, wars. They both have that WHORE sound to them. It's tricky. Does this affect your recommendation? Also: I'm going into conflict journalism, not conflict photography... I mostly just need this to get together a portfolio, and because I've always had a natural eye for it, and because I like to be prepared. The reason I want a good MP rate is for situations like, suppose I'm witnessing a genocide, and I have no idea who the military personnel are. Unless I have time to get close-ups of all of them, I need to just take wide shots, and be able to crop them when and if I get the information later.

QUOTE (chinamon @ Oct 5 2009, 01:50 AM) sorry wish i knew stuff about cameras. its something i always wanted to get in to. You are a filthy, filthy whore. QUOTE (liquidglass @ Oct 5 2009, 12:30 AM) I'm not a pro by any means but I'm pretty damn good even with simple point and shoots. MP aren't always the thing to look for though. Not saying you're wrong, just a suggestion. Here's an article http://lifehacker.com/5086834/think-of-meg...rms-of-cupcakes Yarr, I've read up on this common misconception. But I expect that I'll be capturing scenes fairly frequently wherein I don't even know at the time what or who the subject is, and therefore will probably be cropping quite a bit. More MP = more cropping without losing resolution, doesn't it? Streetbob: thanks for your input. I think I'll decide on the more rugged series by Canon, to eliminate an overabundance of choices.

I'm having a hard time imagining any photographic situation where you wouldn't have to jump into trenches... you get better light angles that way.

Packing Debate
gaia.plateau replied to tranoid no ki's topic in Discussion Group for all Hookah Lovers
I thought I would reply in rhyme this time. To pack is a thing difficult to explain, for each bowl is built just to its smoker's taste. For she who has aims of plentiful flavour, a tighter packed bowl is better to savour. But- for he who would seek more girthful clouds, a bowl that is loose is all that's allowed. Though preference demands more foil, fingers and hands, there still is much more for you to understand. Each bowl type has needs, and we gurus've agreed, each shisha is surely different indeed. For unwashed to pack, like Tangy or Nak, be sure to impress rather strongly, But for washed and wetter, like Lay'lina or Fak'er, to do this would be oh-so-wrongly. The lesson to learn, so no shisha will burn, is which and when to do in turn. For your question of phunnel, allow me to tunnel, into vast forum knowledge eternal. The trick: to press deep in the round shisha heap with a widish device in your keeping, To penetrate through to the bowl's bottom true, do this and you ne'er will be weeping. Be sure to swish 'round on the bowl's bottom ground with your chosen implement of poking, For from ma'assal tightly packed you can only extract goodish clouds if the bottom is smoking. - gaia.plateau, 2009 -
The only way this is going to meet my expectations is if they do the entire thing as a hallucination being experienced by Smecker at the end of the movie, compete with drag and riverdancing.

Shisha Not Bubbling
gaia.plateau replied to steve09's topic in Discussion Group for all Hookah Lovers
It would still bubble with however many holes in the foil, you don't even need a bowl. A leak in the hose or one of the grommets would have to be really big to cause this, virtually impossible to miss... and if we assume the OP is not completely retarded he should have a viable amount of water in the base Gotta be ball bearing or downstem. -

If it isn't a ball bearing issue, you might have a leak or crack in your stem. -

Feeding The People On The Streets....
gaia.plateau replied to Tyler's topic in Serious Discussion Forum
If someone is providing a service that I am genuinely grateful for, I'll pay them for it. Failing that, I'll try to find something for them to do which is worth my paying for, like being a short-term guide if I'm in a new city. If I can't satisfy either of these things, I don't perpetuate cultures of dependency by giving charity. -
I think del Sol, NoB and ilikemyusername need to have a Post Whoring Contest. A Whore-Off, I guess. To determine who is the greatest, once and for all.
