Glycerine Smoke Experiments..

Recommended Posts

As the topic states, i am in the initial stages of creating my own homemade shisha. I have read almost every related topic on these forums.

When it comes to homemade shisha recipe's, people have been extremely vague and have rarely given out exact quantaties or ratios. Thus leading me to perform a serious of experiments in order to minimise the chances of humiliation. If anyone has actually successfuly made homemade shisha. Please let me know (in detail if possible) how you were able to master it in the end. (possible recipe? rolleyes.gif )

My Aim is to come up with a unviversal Homemade shisha recipe (all ratios and quantities included) that is easy and that anyone can follow and perform.

Stage 1: Smoke Test (Warning!! Do not attempt this indoors.. if not, have a towel ready to frantically wave at the smoke detector for each time it goes off).

As we all know, the primary ingredient to increase smoke is Glycerine (also known as Glycerin & Glycerol). I needed to find out what happens when mixing glycerine with other ingredients. What causes it to decrease in smoke, and what can cause it to increase in smoke.

I ran a series of tests over the stove at maximum temperature.

1. Burnt small amounts of pure glycerine.

This stuff smoked like hell (even for a drop). I was amazed at the amount of white smoked that pored out, no wonder they use this shit in smoke machines. Heating pure glycerine at high temperaters also cause it to ignite as it seems to be slightly flamable. Burning this stuff didnt achieve much, but i needed to to have a measure to go by. Note. Pure glycerine smoke smells like crap (reminded me of al basha).

2. Added various sweetners to glycerine and burnt.

I wont go into too much details, but it seems any form of sugar or glucose based sweetners cause the smoke to be reduced. The only difference is the odor. There smoke is less dense, however the odor is sweet and almost pleasant on all sweetners burnt with glycerine.

3.
Food Colouring added to glycerine and burnt.

No apparent effect. Smoke is very similar to pure glycerine, no change in odor.

Conclusion: Well, not much to conclude except i got a fair idea of how much of this shit i should use, i will also need to be extremely carful when cooking the shisha (final stage). Dont what this shit going up in flames!

Stage 2: The Artifical flavour debate. (Yet to be done)

0. Purchacing

1. Alcohol based Vs. Oil Based Vs. Organic(natural).

2. The Right mix (Getting the ratios right).

Stage 3: Tobacco, Tobacco, Tobacco..

0. Purchasing the right tobacco.

1. Preperation
- soak/wash
- choping

Stage 3: Cooking (Soon my friends)

More stages to come (To be continued).. Edited by phr0

Honey & Glycarine seem to be a popular mix?

I have, personally, found that just blindly adding glycarind to shisha does not allways create the super
smoke that one wants (IE: Adding it to nakhla which is allmost allways on the dry side)

However, just adding a small amoung and really mixing it around the shisha seems to work.
Their is, in my opinion, a optimum level for glyacarin. And i've had mixed results with honey (Perchance you may need some special honey, not the honey one uses on toast?)

But good luck!

Best of luck to you. A few tips, your hardest part will probably be finding good artificial flavoring, that gives the flavor you want. Also I would think that you would use a nice bit of glycerin per batch (assuming this because eric has a 55 gallon drum of the shit. Also you probably want tobacco that is fresh and hasn't been tamped with. You can of course order this on line.

A suggestion...

For what it's worth, I once took 50 g. of Al Waha Vanilla and washed out all the glycerine and honey. After the leaf dried out, there was only 6g. of it . So you could start with 12 percent dry tobacco by weight. Add enough water to get the leaf pliable. Then add glycerine and honey. For flavors, you can use cooking extracts such as lemon, orange or peppermint. How much flavor is up to you. I have used peppermint. Start with a few drops and add it last. It works. Perhaps make up a mix of 20 percent honey/80 percent glycerine for starters. It's up to you of course.

So...12g bone dry tobacco+3g H20 + 85g glycerine/honey = 100g shisha. Let us know how it works for you! tongue.gif

^^ Thanks for the advice.

I have placed orders online for some New Highly concentrated flavour oils, I am hopeing these will be much better then the alcohol based flavours.

Will post results as soon as these babies come and i start cooking some serious shisha.

One thing, ive been hearing allot of "Honey" mentions, i always thought this would be used only as a substitute where molasses or other glucose based syrup isnt available. Am I wrong on this? How imporant is the use of honey and what type will be best.

Perhaps the best way is to create a honey, glycerine, molasses mixture. Then adding that to tobacco.

^^ HAHA. Wont be burning that shit anymore. I accidentally spilt a few drops over the stove, smoke was everywhere!! I couldnt fuckin see a thing. The smoke detector (which was on the other side of my unit) started going crazy.. I started opening windows, covered the stove with a towel. Then got another towel and began to wave it at the smoke detector. It stopped, but smoke kept pouring out of the kitchen and it went off a few more times.

I got a fan out of my room and placed it in the kitchen and pointed it towards the window. That finally did the trick!

In regards to what AZ said...
You might also be able to use tombac or jurak to make your shisha. I know that some Arabic market places carry it also hookahcompany carries it. From what I heard, you soak it in water until the leafs are apart, then you would normally either cut it up or pack the bowl with it, but you might be able to just cut it and then add honey/glycerin/corn syrup and flavoring.

Stage 2: The Artifical flavour debate.

0. Purchacing

Ok, admitingly this was extremely hard. I bought some alcohol based flavour essence from the supermarket, allthough these were "Ok" and might be ideal for mixing, but to be used alone will be real bad. My advice will be to find a candy flavour supplier or producer, tell them you want some samples of various flavours and might be buying large amounts in the future based on your decision. (they will not be free)

To them, small amounts is 250ml bottles of each flavour!!! This is usually oil based and highly concentrated!! This will set you back approx $5 per 50ml

1. Alcohol based Vs. Oil Based Vs. Organic(natural).

Alcohol based seem to be more ideal to be used as a mixer, they are stronger than oil based flavours, however they dont smell or taste as good as the oil based.

2. The Right mix (Getting the ratios right).

The only thing i can say for now is trial and error is key. There is no right or wrong amount, it is all preference, if you want it more smokey use a little more glycerine, more flavour less glycerine + little more flavour. The rest is detail. Edited by phr0
