mcknight
I just got this bowl and it's beautiful, I love it. The only problem I have with itis the glass scalli mod is huge. This makes it difficult to pack a bowl without the tobacco touching the foil which burns. I have always put the tobacco in after the mod is in. I think I should have gotten the large one. Is there somethign I am not thinking of to fit more tobacco in the bowl? Would it be possible to pack the bowl before putting the mod on? Will the phunnel without the mod work well at all? The physics of the thing make me think that it wouldn't be worth it without the mod.
monkey
really? i was just about to order a small mnh glass with the mod. I read somewhere on an old thread that the mod is unnecessary with the small given its size. It might only be necessary with funnels whose diameter require 2 or more coals. I would suggest that you poke your holes in a donut shape around where the hole is so it will in essence work the same by distributing heat and airflow to the bowl before reaching the funnel. I honestly dont see why the mod has to be so big, all ive heard is complaints about how big the damn thing is. theres no reason why the mod cant be only slightly larger than the diameter of the funnel hole. The only problem with poking holes is that some of the juices will drain out which almost negates one of the best things about the phunnel. Could you be more descriptive where to poke the holes? Woudl I do it near the bottom of the bowl or in the middle?Any more comments or suggestions would be fantastic. The bowl is the perfect size without the mod. monkey
oh, you thought i meant poke holes in the bowl itself? im not sure how you would do that....No, i meant when poking holes in the foil to poke them in a donut shape so that there is a little circle of unpoked foil where the funnel hole would rest below. The center of your coal should be right on top of this unpoked circle. Id probably make the circle slighter larger than the diameter of the funnel's hole. The whole idea of the scalli mod was to prevent air from going directly into the hole and cause it instead to go over the rest of the bowl before being sucked down, theres no reason using this foil pattern cant work as well, especially in small bowls. Is that what everyone does with putting the bowl in the middle like that with no holes under it?
monkey
Thats what i would do with small funnel bowls that cant make use of the mod. Coals dont need to consume the surface area of the bowl work effectively, a 2.5" dia bowl i have, one coal measuring 1" will heat the whole bowl. You will need to use more than one coal for bowls measuring 3"+. I would only use that pattern for funnels though.

GordonMac
I dont understand the idea of this scalli mod thing. I smoke from my medium sized phunnell without one and I think it smokes great. Are these mods really necesary or just a marketing gimick I wonder.

But with the larger ones they probably are necessary for the tobacco to be heated up all the way to the bottom.
