Lakemonster
Re-install windows?Luckily with XP you can do do that without losing files and programs that were previously installed.Ive had to do it once.
ShishaFred
When nothing works and I don't mind too much , I reformat and re-install xp. It's like having a new computer , the performance upgrade is usually noticeable.

billy
There was no need for a full reinstall, you should have chose the "XP Repair" option which only removes the Windows files and leaves every other saved file.

misterbeetz
QUOTE (.cOLt.45. @ Apr 18 2007, 03:27 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>thanks bomberto ^^ i wuold like to retrieve some data...how would i go about doing that?Dang. Too bad I didn't see this post before. The repair probably would have worked if you have an XP cd handy. As for data recovery... whatever was on there is slowly being written over as you continue using the computer. The bits are written in a random fashion so there isnt a good way to tell what's recoverable until you actually finish a recovery process. I've used a program called GetDataBack (http://www.runtime.org/) for such a recovery but it costs 80 bucks if you want to get a legit copy.I used this program to recover 140 gigs of music off a partition that I accidentally formated. The difference in my case however was that formating the drive dosent really cause data to be overwritten until you start installing/moving files onto the partition itself. Since the drive was untouched after the format, I was lucky enough to recover everything.- misterbeetz Edited April 19, 2007 by misterbeetz

lazria
this is why i store my pic, music, doc's on my 2nd HDD and have Window's running on it's own HDD. TWICE this year something "BAD" has happened that caused a FULL re-format and re-install... I so share your pain man. Been there - done that.i would highly suggest keeping weekly DVD back-up or investing in a portable HDD to keep your files on. it will aid in the frustration during future computer FUBAR's
EvansLight
Been running the same install of windows for a good 4 years now 99% of full crashes are user error, and at least 40% of problems that get people to reformat, can be solved with a bit of time and know how without reformatting
lazria
Evan - my last crash happened overnight while I was asleep. Window's "tried" updating something and rebooted. I woke up when the PC started beeping with every failed reboot. TOOK everything out it tried, last 5 programs, everything - Part of the issue was the HDD had an pyshical error on it and it finally caught up with everything. Don't ask, but the drive was old and already had outlived the previous set-up which had been fried during a hurricane. For me, it's almost never fatal Window's crashes - it tends to be hardware death. Motherboards, CPU's, RAM, HDD... you name it, I've had it all go up in flames (literay in some cases) during my ten-year with computers.
