Bawhee
I have some nakhla coal, 5cm across, I find it makes for a good long lasting shisha if i cut it in half and light one half, put it on the foil (only tested on foil) and just leave it on, then when it starts too cool quite a bit (the smoke looses thickness) I push it in the tray and put on the other half (well lit before placing it on obviously). The trick is to place the other half at a right angle compared to how the last one was so you use up ALL of the tobacco! Seems to last between 80 to 120 minutes, depends on tobacco, you may want to (as mentioned a couple posts above) stir up the bottom layer of tobacco but I usually don`t just cos it all gets way too hot to touch

sheiep
guys what shall i do if the base of the hookah cracks??
Tape it up, use it as a "travel/camping" hookah. That's what I did with my old Mya, doesn't leak anymore and I don't care if it gets dirty during my outdoor ventures. f27tami
I've discovered that putting a charcoal screen on 'upside down' or in other words, dished side up, keeps the coals off the shisha much more effectively
