depends? is said stereo even able to be controlled by a remote?

also depends on brand? reason: some older pioneer, sony, ect brand have the ability to plug in a certain type of wire in the back to allow 1 component to control & operate all the devices (both my sony & BF's pioneer have this feature).

but the controller device still must be able to be controlled by either type of remote (IR and another type who's name is escaping me).

The easiest way to get another remote would be to find a universal remote that can control it. If you really just want volume and don't care about appearance, you could rip all the buttons off or put the logic boards, transmitter, and volume buttons in another case.

Another option is to buy a learning remote. I'm not aware of any basic learning remotes, but they may exist. A learning remote can "learn" the signals another remote emits by holding the two remotes together. You can program it to emit any infrared signal. I have a learning remote that has keys from an infrared computer keyboard learned into it to control my MythTV Digital Video Recorder. I *think* I had to do the same to get the XBOX DVD controls into the remote, but it may have had a preset for XBOX.

Fairly basic learning remote ($27): http://www.macmall.com/macmall/shop/detail...20Control-Video

I should add I don't have the remote I linked to. This is what I have (I got it 4 years ago for about $90): http://www.amazon.com/Sony-RM-VL1000-12-De...r/dp/B00006B0QC

It was a great remote, but the display is now dead. I think one of my roommates did something to it while I was gone one summer. Still works, but we have to remember what the top buttons are set to do.

This remote sounds like it would be way overkill for what you're looking to do.
