A Question Regarding The Mya-type Self-sealing Mechanism

Recommended Posts

Recently traded the bent, dented 4-hose stem (and hoses) I received from saharasmoke.com/thehookahhouse.com (not sure if they are affiliated with eachother) for a MYA-type, chinese made, 2 hose stem and hoses from a local hookah shop. No MYA trademarks anywhere, but "HAVANA" written on the inside of the tray.

Immediately noticed that it was a lot harder to pull from than the bent egyptian style stem I had. Initially thought that the diameter of the new hoses might be smaller. The thought of having to spend even more money really upset me.

Then, just to experiment, I removed the ball bearing from the self-sealing mechanism (which, by the way, worked amazingly well) and saw a tremendous difference. Pulling was much more effortless.

Still I am unhappy. The mechanism was created for a reason, and I am quite sure that reason was not to restrict the airflow of the person smoking. What am I doing wrong?

well its not a mya, and you said yourself it pretty much was a chinese knockoff so what can you expect? I'd say jus buy those hose caps from socialsmoke and jus get rid of the ball bearings

The auto seal is too make it so when you draw in air, it doesn't just bring air from the second hose...Now that you don't have that, it's just bringing in air from the second hose and will not hit as well unless you have someone put their finger over the hole

By the way. The stem looks so much like the one on the 17" chinese hookah sold by hookahcompany.com for 39.95 that I am quite convinced that that is the brand I have. The base, the hoses, the bowl all look like the hookah that they guy at the store pulled the stem off of. The MYA bowl and stem on the otherhand look quite distinct.

Thanks for all of your help guys.
