azcoyote
I've have trouble getting my olivewood lump coals going which got me to thinking of possible alternatives. http://www.xenotechresearch.com/solfurn1.htmI bought a much smaller fresnel lens today on ebay - 7x11 inches. Should do the trick. Check out the link to a monster solar furnace - it's quite impressive!

I will be trying to make something much smaller than that. Still the focal point of that 7"x10" lens will get plenty enough hot to ignite hard natural coals. I will control the temperature by imposing aperture masks over the lens. The lens was cheap - like $7.00 with shipping. Couldn't resist. I have also made a scaled down version of the charcoal igniter that uses newspaper in a steel chimney. I used a 20 oz tomato sauce can and a drain strainer and it rawks hard. The coals get totally read hot in about 6 minutes. The drain strainer was a 99 cent store item. Fits can perfectly snug! Almost free!
Brain Damage
Our Science club has one at school, they've used it to melt pennies and boil water, so it would be cool to light charcoal
