Thinking Of Selling Hookah's In America.. Have Question

Recommended Posts

I've spent the year in israel and its soon time to go home. Before I depart I was thinking of buying a bunch of hookah's to sell back home. The hookah's here are awesome, and much more cheaper here than they are in the US. Like a very good hookah here can be about 100 shekels(roughly 25 dollars) and it will last you a long time. My question is do you think this is a good business venture, and will I be able to turn good profit back in the states? Also, where would be the best place to sell them (ie ebay etc.)

Unless you plan on bringing them over by the freight load, I don't think it will be very cost effective. If you bring over a couple dozen at a time, the shipping will probably hurt you the most. Pretty much all the larger online retailers that import hookahs do so by the thousand, to cut down on shipping costs as much as possible.

I'm not saying you won't make money, but your margins will definitely be slimmer than the big boys, unless you charge more of course.

Just crunch some numbers before hand. Find out exactly how many hookahs you are thinking of bringing over, and how much they will cost. Do you plan on just buying a bunch and bringing them home with you and thats that, or were you planning on finding a source and buying more in the future?

...same as Egypt, very inexpensive. 20 bucks American gets you a pretty good hookah, but that's only if you go to the markets and haggle. I've seen some hookahs aimed at tourists in the malls and they were up to 80 USD...that's how much the biggest one at the Dubai Duty Free was. But they're very nice, and I'm sure would be double that in North America.

The only thing is if you're into name brand stuff...in Egypt, most pipes are made there but there's no 'real' way to prove it unless you know the family. There's a ton of guys selling pipes in the Khan market, but only a few who reallly know what a quality pipe is, and they usually do cost a bit more.

I combatted that with buying parts instead of whole hookahs...a base here, a pipe there, hoses someplace else. Although I'm sure i got a good deal on my pipe, after reading up and talking to another seller in the market I realized that perhaps I don't have a great seal on my pipe....there were air leaks in the solid sections themselves, not at the screw joints like one would expect. That being said it's still a great pipe, even though it's not completely air-tight.

I'd say hookahs would be a great novelty especially since they're gaining in popularity. And who wants to go to a hemp shop just for a nice hookah?
