My Story Of Hookah And A Few Questions

Well, I grew up as one of those kids that never tried a beer or smoke in their whole lives. To be honest I always thought I was better than people for not doing any of that stuff, and now I regret it. When I lived in the dorms in college, the people in the room across me had a big hookah and people would always be comming over to smoke with them. I got invited a few times but I was just like blah blah bad for your health, don't want to try it.

Well, after my first year in college I was on vacation with my younger brother and older sister and we went to a bar. Now, I was always under the impression that if you drink a beer, you will lose your mind and be running around like a retard. Now I know that is not the case. Well, so I drank a beer just so they didn't feel weird. So then we went to a dance club, now you guys have to know, I am really really shy. I wanted to dance really bad, so.. what did I do, I drank a couple more beers and loosened up enough to dance and had a lot of fun. So this was my first "wow, drugs aren't so horrible as everyone makes them out to be.

Well, how does this relate to hookah? Well I went through this phase where I was sorta down with life around my junier year (which is ending right now), and I started smoking cbecause it made me get in a better mood. Then one day I remembered the hookah when I was still in the dorms, so today I went out to get one and try it off. As a side note now after looking online I got sorta ripped off, but I didn't want to wait for shipping and everything.

So I read about how to use it, lit up, and it is lots of fun. I really like the taste, not necessarily better than cigarettes, but it is just different. And I can't wait to buy more flavors to try out.

Also one of the aspects I can't wait for is the social aspect. That is another reason I started smoking cigarettes also. Like I said I was really shy, but if I went out for a smoke I could just walk up to another smoker and talk, you seem to have a bond automatically.

Ok this is getting really long so I'll ask my questions now.
1) I'm guessing since they gave me a roll of charcols free with the hookah its some cheap brand. But the question is how to you ash it. I tried picking it up with the tongs and hitting the tongs on the ash tray on top and only a little bit fell off, it was still gray/white. So I tried scraping some of it off and that worked but its annoying to do.

2) My more important question. When you are hanging out with a bunch of people and say you only have one hose, do you usually just share it, or put something on the tip, or what. I don't want to offend anyone by sharing it, or by not wanting to share it since they have bad hygene.

1. Seems like you want to ash it before there "ready". You could wait a little longer till there ready to ash, usually every 10-20 minutes you can take each coal, ash them, blow off the ash on top of the bowl, and set them around the bowl accordingly.

2. With my hookah, we have one hose for 1-15+ people, and because I don't have any tips we all share the same germy hose. I usually wipe the mouth tip off but that probably doesn't do much anyways.

So far I haven't gotten sick from other people who have smoked with colds and that's pretty often considering I live in MN. Maybe I'm lucky or something, but I'm not any more worried about catching a friends cold than I am at catching cancer some years later. If health is your concern, hookah's none of your business .

You can pick up a bag of tips for pretty cheap and give them to your buddies if they got diseases and such.

It does, thanks. I guess I will just have a little rag to wipe it when we pass it around. And now that you say it, yeah it does sound silly that I am worrying about a cold if I'm messing up my lungs anyways.

First off, welcome to the forum...

Now, i don't know what coals you are using ut for quicklights I absolutely love goldens...don't ash as m,uch like the other quicklights. To ash it, i just pick it up with tongs, do a couple taps, then slide it around the tray a it and low off the top of the bowl. econd, I have a 2 hose but we share a lot and don't wprry about it, just notice that if you're friends are sick tell them soprry, but no smoking, its common manners not to when your sick. Hope all goes well

People with colds really shouldn't smoke Don't kick your body while it's trying to get up haha.
To ash my coals I just pick them up and drop them on the plate a couple of times. It does the job pretty well.

Some people don't ash, I do. I either scrape it off, or give it a gentle bang in the ash try.

I usually just share with no problems. Generally my friends are courteous and when they are sick, they will ask for a mouthpiece

hello rib5 and welcome to hookah forum. I'm also new to this site hehe. Well reading your story, if found out that we have the same personality definetly shy. But i don't drink beer hehe:lol: but i do smoke hookah. i started smoking it last year and i don't even smoke cigarettes. i just like hookah better hehe.

i use mouth piece or tips.

for the ash i just tap it with the tongs i hope this help.

...I'm not paranoid about diseases and such, and usually people are courteous...


....cold sores being the big obvious one, nothing worse than handing the pipe over to a mutated cold sore infected lip!!....but yeah, tips are cheap and easy (try em out tho, I have about a dozen that didn't fit my pipe, had to trim them to get a good seal).

While hookah is a nice way to socialize, in my opinion I'd say that the social skills come first..if you're smoking anything just so you can hang out with people, I'd say that's the first sign of "not smoking shisha for the right reasons"...smoking cigarettes just to talk to others?...not smart at all.

It kinda reads that you're not really thinking for yourself...I could be wrong. Figure it this way...you realized that drugs aren't all 'that bad' for yourself, as long as you're responsible in their use. But doing something just to be part of a 'group' isn't thinking for yourself, that's just sheep mentality...but I'm glad you found out that shisha is a 'small pleasure' in the world..welcome!
