Smoking In Public

For someone who has never heard of or seen the hookah, I am sure it would look very suspicious if someone saw you smoking one. The first time me or my roommate saw one we assumed it was for weed or some other illegal substance. The person who owned it just explained to us that it is for smoking tobacco.

Well, the reason I am talking about this is I want to take it out to the beach and just sit around smoking a little but I am worried that if a police officer saw it and didn't know what it was he would assume the worst and arrest me or something. Even if you explain something, cops sometimes have a habbit of being very stubborn and probably wouldn't care what you said.

So, ever smoked this in public? What kind of reactions did you get? Did cops know what it was?

Actually i was thinking the same thing.. i live in so cal and i want to bring my hookah to the beach or to a local park.. i wonder if they have any smoking bans against doing it? hmm

I have cops come to my house before since my "Neighbors" believe i was smoking Green stuff..... ya.....

i done it in the park and i got hostle and yes, i was taken to jail but was released in a matter of hours. The best part was they cleaned the hell out of my hookah

I'm pretty sure they can tell from the smell. All you have to do is show them the shisha and that thick, glazed-looking tobacco will deter them.

not always - they (the cops) saw the hookah and put on gloves to dig thru my shisha!!! I explained exactly what it was and the oldest dude just gave me this look..... but didn't do anything or say anything else about it...

I wouldn't worry much...if the cops come up to you don't be jerks, don't get hostile...they have the right to ask and talk to you...you have the right to tell them the truth, keep a package of the tobacco your smoking and let them sniff and look....be reasonable and logical...no cop can arrest you for smoking tobacco all they can do is right you a fine if your smoking tobacco where you shouldn't be...like if your area has a indoor smoking ban or something

Cops along with any other person have the right to ask you questions, do not be mean or rude or take offense...be nice, offer them a good smoke...through tolerance and education people will learn and start saying "Oh its just a hookah" instead "HOLY CRAP IS THAT A BONG"

Just be smart if your going to smoke in public...there are just going to be people who are clueless and you'll need to clue them in.

eh. If a cop takes your hookah they have every right to take your hookah and do a field or a lab test on it. and see what exactly it is that you're smoking out of it. That is the risk you take when you go outside with something that looks like a nefarious object.

they dont have to take your word on it. Some do some dont.

I would be uber nice to the police and not get an attitude with them if they try to field test it. That will only make you look guilty and give them more probable cause.

I Work for the pd so i've educated 90% of my guys and gals on it, and they now know what it is, and what they look like. it's still up to their descretion if a field test or drug test is needed.

honestly did i care? no. The cop wasnt being an asshole, i admit first hand i was out of line when i became hostile towards them.

See one thing i dont get, people will hate cops blah blah blah, but when your shit gets stolen. Who do they call?

I (being sober) spend a lot of time at a local 24 hour diner. We wanted to bring in my bambino for some good coffee/hookah/pancake sessions, but the servers (who we all know by name, and many of which we see socially outside of the diner) turned the idea down. It seems someone had tried this about a year ago, and a little old lady called the police. The cops showed up, and saw what was going on, and no action was taken, but the ordeal was enough to ban hookah smoking in the place.

Whats a guy gotta do to smoke some hookah while being served coffee? Oh ya... hookah bars.

I once had an inncident a gorgeous summer night in California it was about 2:00 A.M. about 7 of us went to the park and smoked a few bowls. eventually the cops came because of our noise disturbance (we were singing and got a little out of hand) The cop looked at my shisha and exclaimed "what is this food?" gladly educated them on the fact that it isn't food the cop let us go with no tickets for being in the park after hours or the noise complaints also a plus no tickets to the two underage smokers Victory

last summer, when i got my first hookah, a couple friends and i would always smoke it at this little park in between my neighborhood and the neighborhood next to us. Anyways, we had the cops called on us twice in one night. We greeted the cops, gave them our full respect, explained exactly what was going on, even offered the cop a smoke. All he did was say that if anything happened to us, and was hostile, to give him a call, and gave us all a card.

yes, you can be taken to jail for probable cause esp If they did a field test there.

Yeah if they did the field test that's different, because then if it's been used for other things, then thats actually a crime

I bet if i was nice or polite, they wouldn't have taken extreme precautions. Also why do i care if i was there for a few hours? I told them keep up the good work, cuz i know their job is hard. I dont blame them, i blame myself for being a dick towards them when i should have been more polite.

Also did i ever state i had a "Fun" time in jail? no.


Was i in a cell by myself yes. so nothing to do. like if i was at home on the couch. Doing nothing.

A douce huh??? maybe you mean a douche? ... Wasn't in Juvi both times...don't have to take you to juvi for serious offenses...and if you got hostile and did something then they didnt take you in for the hookah only.

They must have just taken you to a holding cell, not the actual jail if you were there for a few hours
