The smoke was ok, but perhaps the pipe is a bit small for three people...everybody really thought it was cool and loved the smell (I started them with Nakla Two Apples). However, since I've had more shisha than my friends, that the taste wasn't all that great...I'm using normal coals that I bought in Egypt...supposedly they are the type you find in the shisha bars. Not quick starting, anyway.I was careful to not burn the tobacco however after the bowl was finished, I looked in and the tobacco was all charred...I placed 3 smaller pieces of coal around the bowl and moved them every five or so minutes, but it appears that the shisha burned anyway.After reading all the posts here, I'm wondering how to avoid burning the shisha excessively...I've had great smokes in Egypt and I tried to steal all their techniques at the shisha bars...for instance, they'd switch the coals every 10 or so minutes completely, and wouldn't move them at all once they were in position.I've read that you should pack the bowl lightly, and just to the lip to avoid scorching....which ruins the bowl, so I've read....mind you I wouldn't know, back in Egypt if we had a lousy bowl we'd just fire up another one..usually it just meant "change the coals".Shisha is tricky, but I didn't think it would be this much work...lol!...and I don't know how you all get 45 minutes out of a bowl, this one was probably finished around 20 minutes or so...but as long as I got smoke, I just kept going...I find the flavour doesn't usually last much longer than that, but you still get a buzz so I figured the flavour just wore out.Thanks for reading, this is a total newbie post obviously...I just wanna get the best experience for my friends, as I've come to really enjoy shisha...they dug it too as far as I could tell. I often smoke nahkla out of the funnel and it's a brilliant smoke. atarilovesyou Posted May 4, 2007 Author Share Posted May 4, 2007 ..thanks for the tips.The bowl is kinda smallish, but when I look at the FAQ's here, I see some contradictory stuff...it says use small coals, but then I see a pic with 2 great big coals, one kinda leaning on the other...lol...back in Egypt, that was my big mistake, putting a single big quick lite coal right on top of the bowl...but I think that more than 2 coals is a pain in the butt to move.Am I reading it right...."when the coals are covered in gray ask, then dust em on the plate, and THEN move their position"....I'm now convinced you can't 'stop' charring because you'd have to move the coals every 3 minutes or so, but I've read now where it seems you just move the coals to a 'new' spot on the bowl, use up the tobacco there, and move on in a circular fashion.That makes sense to me, I've never really looked at it that way....in Egypt, they'd just take off the old coals, blow through the bowl, and pop on three or four more small coals...they'd do that every 15 minutes or so.PS....God bless open-element hotplates!
