William Hickey wrote in his Memoirs that shortly after his arrival in Calcutta in 1775:

"Here everybody uses a hookah, and it is impossible to get on without'.....[I] have frequently heard men declare they would much rather be deprived of their dinner than their hookah"

Which would you rather be deprived of?

I mean, if you smoke daily of course

Would you rather go without your dinner, or without your smoke?

On a completely unrelated note, is this a forum? Edited by nofrendo

Why is nofrendo's question dumb? If you don't like the thread, don't respond.

Dinner or hookah? Hmmm... Let me smoke a bowl and get back to you.

Agreed. How rude

I'd be hungry, smoke a bowl and completely forget about my hunger for hours. Strangest thing, but you can probably get my answer out of that.

First of all, kudos to you for supplying us with a background to accompany us with your question; that makes it all the more interesting!

Second, ignore the people who say this thread is "dumb." They obviously weren't burdened with an overabundance of braincells.

Third, I'll get back to you when I find out! I just ordered my hookah, pretty much in piecemeal, so I'm still waiting on the stem and whatnot. I can't wait to smoke it!

You know man their is no need to get rude dry.gif
Theirs been days I've skipped dinner and had hookah instead, but i found it a lot more enjoyable on a full stomach.
Just because we thought the question was dumb does not make us dumb. Hell, it doesn't even make the person who asked it dumb. Maybe when you get your hookah you can relax for a fricken second and rethink things before you go and insult people.

Well if anyone has ever talked to an insecure teenage girl you would know that tobacco is an appetite suppressant. So to miss one meal and smoke is no big deal really. I think the exert from the book sort of illustrates more the fact that in other cultures having a smoke at a cafe is like going to the pub for a drink. Its a sanctuary for men to be men hence why the Indians mentioned probably made the reference to the sacrifice.

Oh and to the first person that responded..don't be a dick dude.

last night i came home and it was just starting to get dark, but it was so nice out i decided to skip eating and make a hookah so i could sit out on the balcony before it got completely dark. then i just forgot to eat later.

Tonight I skipped dinner in favor of a nice smoke, since I wasn't really hungry. I found that instead of suppressing my appetite, smoking hookah stoked it, unlike cigarettes. I'm just glad I don't have to choose. As the old saying goes (modified to suit our purposes here), eat, drink [smoke] and be merry, for tomorrow we may die... How's that for uplifting?
