Tangiers Problem

Recommended Posts

I recently bought a few 250g boxes of Tangiers shisha and the smoke is always way too harsh. I've tried mixing the shisha, using two layers of aluminum foil, and switching to a cooler coal. But every time I try it the smoke is too harsh. My hookah smokes all other brands perfectly (like nakhala, Havana, and fusion), so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. (It’s a bit confusing since the shisha gets such good reviews here) If anyone has had a similar experience or knows how to fix this, I would appreciate the input.

You're going to want to pack the bowl with a healthy portion. Then, you'll want to poke holes in 2 rings (I use this method with and without my phunnel) and break your 3K in half, lighting them and placing them on opposite sides of the bowl. You *should* get good smoke, but different techniques work for different people.

There is no guarantee a phunnel will solve your problem.
Try acclimating for several hours where you are going to be smoking. Pack the bowl until it is overflowing over the rim. Then lightly pat it down until its level (or slightly above) with the rim. Put one layer of foil on. Poke holes, lots of holes, all over the bowl with something wider then a toothpick. Blow into the bottom of the bowl to make sure there is no tobacco blocking the holes at the bottom of the bowl.
Try breaking a 3kings in half, and placing the coal on opposite sides. If you have a windcover, use it. If you don't, take a large square of foil (like slightly larger then your hand) and tear a hole in the middle, like an inch by an inch. Place it over the bowl and coals, and kinda make the edge tight to the bottom of the bowl - you are trying to create a little oven to help evenly heat the bowl. After a few minutes if you are not getting much smoke, add another half a coal, then after a few minutes another if need be.

Don't use cold water, use warm, in the base. Edited by Twang

Hello all!
I enjoy smoking my hookah verry much, so relaxing and a good way to pass the times with the friends. after reading such great reviews on the tangires peach i had to have some. i got 250g's of "peach" flavored shisha while i was at it i also picked up some 40 mm golden quicklights.

i have tried all the stuff posted above using half/ quarter/ and whole coals

i feel i am not getting the big puffy clouds as desibed from the reviews nor the taste. i let it sit out for 8 hours and mixed it all up in a large zip lock bagggy.

most of the time i get a verry harsh pull with little or no smoke. if i add more coal it gets harsher with little or no smoke still. i use heat management to the best of my knolage and it still does not pruduce anything...

is my problem the coals?

im verry frustrated and do not understand what i am doing wrong. any and all help would be greatly appriciated!
thanks so much
-Justin

Ah... Tangiers can be so frustrating. Troubleshooting a harsh bowl is no good... IF you manage to get it smoking well, by that time you're half-dead from nicotine poisoning. Just gotta keep trying though, I guess... it's definitely been worth it for me.

Lately, for me the trick seems to be to pack the bowl as sloppily as possible. Just grab a few globs of tobacco out of the tub with your hands and drop them in the bowl. Don't really spread it around or anything, just drop it in there. Don't break up any of the chunks. It might seem weird, but that's what has worked best for me.

As for the coals, 3 Kings 40mm and the Canary Japanese Goldens work best for me. The Japanese Goldens are #1, but they're expensive... Edited by symptom CY

what do you suggest as far as tin foil? lots of holes? not alot of holes... will it burn the shisha that is touching the tin? because im starting to suspect thats what it is...

The foil should be touching the shisha.
Are you confusing strong tobacco with burning?
It took quite a whille before i could take big puffs of tangiers, and even most of my hookah-smoking friends cant.

the biggest mistake ppl make with tangiers is they pack it like they would other finer-cut tobaccos. Just lay tangiers in the bowl, dont push down. Also pile that shit in there... like get it overflowing out of the bowl pretty much, then put ur foil on. Also, use a lot of holes.

+1, it says right on the package that it's not like other tobaccos.

I cant really agree with that.

For me, break up the Tangiers and drop it in nice and loose so its level with the top of the bowl or over flowing. Then take your thumb and press it down level so about 1/4 of the bowl is showing.

Take a coal and place it along the edge of the bowl and start smoking. Whatever you do, never put a coal in the middle of it. That just burns it all the way through.

All good suggestions.

If the smoke is thin and harsh, its either too much or too little tobacco, generally. If you didn't forcibly mash the tobacco down, its too little is my guess as to the problem. Keep it up! Give me a call if you continue to have problems...

first off, i want to thank everyone for the help!

i used the grab a handfull and throw it in there method. then broke my coal into 2 pieces and placed them on each side of the bowl. worked beautiful! i moved them around as the smoke went on. awesome! tasted verry good too. only thing i did not get was huge thick clouds, it was consistantly medium amout of smoke... if anyone has any suggestions for that id be happy to hear it. i think im going to try useing ice in the bottom this time and see where that takes me.

and the buzz... wow felt like i was floating haha. much bigger buzz than a cigarette!

For tangiers to get thick smoke, basically you need to do what you did so far with the 2 pieces of coal, but spread it entirely around the bowl.
I use japanese style easy-lights, and place them on 4 corners of the bowl, im not sure how that translates for QLs, but thats what it took to get smooth big clouds of smoke.

I think Sonthert actually suggests warm water in the base because if you use ice water it gets harsh or something like that.
