Mya Saray V. Khalil Mamoun

Recommended Posts

I have 2 hookahs. (not reviewed yet) A 27" Mya Saray Vortex (LOVE IT) and a 19" Social Smoke Limited Edition Tropical Gemini. I want a third hookah. I dont know whether to get another Mya and know I'm getting a quality product, or take a chance and go with a Khalil Mamoun. I've never seen/smoked from a Khalil Mamoun. SOOOO . . . this is your chance to persuade me. What are your experiences with each, particularly the Khalil Mamoun.

Hi txhookahman,

Mya Saray does supply consistently quality products. Comparing the 2 brands is somewhat difficult, as Mya hookahs are more modern where as KM is a traditional Egyptian. They will both smoke well; the main benefit of a KM is the quality in craftsmanship. Unlike most Egyptian hookahs the KM will have high quality welds and construction on the stem. It is unlikely to have that rattling sound which is common on most Egyptians (this originates from the soldering process). You won't see inconsistent or flawed welding on the seams and the down stem construction will be of higher quality, mainly the intake holes will be machines drilled and even. Also, most Egyptian hookahs arrive with some rust on them; the KM will not have that. Some KM stems disassemble, but I think the ones you're probably looking at are a single unit.

Basically, if you're a fan of classic Egyptian style the KM is your best choice. If you prefer the Mya designs, they will smoke just as good and getting replacements parts will be easier, plus Mya gives you a warranty.

Hope this helps. wink.gif Edited by hookahlife

now that i have both i can clearly say that the choice is simple.

Get either one.

LOL

I just got my MYA today... a high end Cloisonne that the folks at MNhookah tracked down for me. It's absolutely beautiful and the craftsmanship is better than I had expected. Every single piece is machined perfectly and the finish on the entire piece is flawless. The thing smokes liek a dream.

I have a 36inch Khalil Maamon That I got from a friend named Ahmed in Seattle that is an importer. The quality is difinitely the best I have seen on an egyptian pipe. The glass is eh... ok. But from what i have seen Khalils have different levels of glasswork, and the ones available online at hookahcompany, etc. Seem to have the better glass. The stem is great. Super solid construction. Mine does not unscrew, but some do. The older brass cored Khalils I believe unscrewed at the downstem. Mine is heavy guage stainless, so one of the newer designs. The welds are all finished properly and there are no gaps between the spun metal pieces that adorn the stem. There is no rust on it after well over a year of use, and best of all, the purge valve works better than any other egyptian I have tried.

I paid $68 for my Khalil.

I paid almost $200 for my Mya.

Does one smoke better than the other.... time will tell. I don;'t really think so. The MYA was a luxury purchase. I wanted a very ornate hookah that you don't see very often. The Khalil is still by all means the ream of the crop of egyptian pipes. I have another pipe that is an all solid-brass Syrian that gives it a ruyn for it's money, but I don't think you can go wrong with either one.

What it comes down to is buy the one you like the looks of, feel comfortable about the price, and that inspires you to achieve great smoke sessions.

better yet. Buy one now, then buy the other one later. I've got 4 hookahs now with 2 more planned. Too bad I can't claim them as dependants on my taxes.

What I like about KM hookahs is the wide gauge tubing used in all the airways. If you have a nice wide hose that can take advantage of that, it's definitely better to get the KM. Mya hookahs have that screw on hose port, the opening of which is not so large. That's why I tend to prefer Egyptian hookahs over modern style...

hey man,
okie the thing abt the KM-

- wide tubing = nice hit, smooth and huge clouds
- well made, i have one its really well made
- looks very trad
- absolutely no customer service expect the dealer u bought it from, and they may not want to do anything
- spare parts may be alittle hard to come by

mya pts-

- they look excellant
- well made
- the gauge is smaller however
- mya stems then to look nice but when u strip them they seem abit flimsy on some ,models
- excellant and i mean excellant customer service.
- spare parts are easily available
- chinese made

hum, now I'm beginning to reconsider my upcoming MYA purchase. I've seen some of the KM hookahs - they are beautiful. I truely love the eygptian styling more than the modern look of MYA's... As LuxOR541 said, maybe get both - one now and one later. (Which is beginning to sound like a very good idea for me smile.gif )

I have 39 Kahil Hookahs in the Lounge. I bought them almost two years ago from Social Smoke. They still work like a Champ. I have had to replace the three of the Vaes but thats it. They get used seven days a week from 11am till we close at 2am. So like a Timex Watch. They take the Kicking and Keep on Smokeing.

I Say go with the Khalil Mamoun Hookah, i have one that i ran into by mistake, never the less i didn't pay anything for it and it was old when i did get her (2\1 old something like that) never the less even today she smokes like a dream, the taste is amazing and the smoke is nice and dense.
But, MYA has beautiful well-made hookahs, from what i've seen thier design is amazing, it's all polished and beautiful.
How they smoke i wouldn't know... mya isn't shipping to israel and does not have a retailer here as well, but khalil mamoum or even every egyptian hookah that is well made smokes great.
I Have AGER (chinese mya copy) and a Khalil Mamoun egyptian 32', i can't say for sure but the KM smokes better right now since she's older, the AGER one gives alot and i mean alot of smoke but sometimes it's heavy smoke... giving you a very strong buzz.
I Would say go with the KM and buy a MYA another time.

I will probably end up getting both eventually. So far with two hookahs, I'm looking at like at least 4 more. I just can't decide which one to get first.

Here's another (easier) question: I've been using a mitsuba for about a year. I want to upgrade to a medium mya acrylic. Am I justified? What would I expect with my purchase?

alright, it depends on which version of the mya you are going to get. i have done some research on some of the newer products (diva, pyramid, etc) and you won't be getting what you paid for if you purchase one of these. Other than that (if you pick a good mya) it will smoke as good as the KM. I don't really feel like getting into everything right now but if anyone wants to know the problem with the new myas just shoot me a PM and you will have your answer by sunday

go with the KM. the ones you can get from the store are not as good as the ones you can find from distributors but it will still be a solid hookah.

True. I am an online buyer for now. Why leave the house when you don't have to? All you have to do is sit on your ass and punch in your credit card and shipping info. Walk to your front door, take a step outside, walk back inside and you are ready to smoke my friends! lol

I just received my Amer Khalil Mamoun Argileh. Is there a ball bearing in the stem? There is a definitely rattling sound when I turn the stem upside down and back down again but nothing comes out and I see no moving parts which leads me to believe there is a ball bearing at the hose point. Can anyone confirm/deny besides that this thing looks many times better than the one I purchased when I was in Jerusalem.

Also, it seems to have come with a ~15gram bowl. How long should I expect that much ma'sel to last?

edit: Duh, the ball bearing is in the release valve. Edited by m3jsh

My KM Amer doesn't have a rattling sound, and it came with a bowl that could probably hold 20 grams or so. Should be able to smoke that for at least an hour and a half, though I never do.

I don't really see any reason to go with the Hafa over the Amer. Sure it's bigger, but the Amer is still big and I think it comes with a nicer hose. I heard the build quality on the Hafa hose is a bit crappy -- the wrapped KM hose that came with my Amer is nice though.

I don't care about the hose. It is probably going to be replaced with a Mya wide hose. Amer or Hafa? I am still deliberating. sad.gif

If you dont care about the size difference nor the hose they come with then I guess its whichever color you prefer. From what I can gather they smoke the same except for the difference between the hoses they come with.
