My KM Amer rocks -- the only thing that could be better is the vase. Other than that, it's still perfect after 2+ months. Solid construction, brass core, wide airways, high quality welds...

rootdown: What problems did you have with the Hafa? Edited by symptom CY

Yep, I got it from HC around mid-March.

HC said that the stems for the Amer and Hafa have pretty much the same features and differ only in size. The Amer has a nicer hose though, I think... I really see no reason to go with the Hafa over the Amer. Also, HC just released another KM hookah (the "hybrid") for $100 -- doesn't look to be worth the price at all. It seems to be an Amer stem on a clear bohemian vase (which, though nicer than the Amer and Hafa vases IMO is not worth an extra $30.) What's more, it only comes with a standard Mya hose... I'd rather suck the smoke directly from the hose port wink.gif Edited by symptom CY

well when i bought it, i cleaned it but not thoroughly, i tried to smoke it and got this chemical taste that burnt my throat. i went and cleaned it really good and brown sludge came out of the stem!

i think it was lubricated or varnished or something, but this was seriously gross, ive never seen stuff that gross come out of hookahs and i have had a few.

after i cleaned it i could still taste it and couldnt get it out, i turned my hose mouthpiece end towards the ground and hit the hose, and a bunch of black powder came out, i think its from the gross feathers on the hose. i went and washed the hose, i wasnt sure if it was washable or not but i didnt care at that point, it was just too gross.

anyone know if the hose is washable?

im disappointed in this hookah... i will try to smoke it again after i clean it a few more times Edited by rootdown

Rootdown: Another member had the same issue and contacted HC about it -- I'm pretty sure they offered to replace the hookah. I had a little bit of black dust inside the hose port, but I'd only notice it if I stuck my finger in there. In any case, it's not there anymore. I don't know what's up with this black gunk but if you can get past that (and the problems with that hose,) it's a great machine. If I were you, I'd buy some clear vinyl tubing and use the mouthpieces from that Hafa hose to make a new one.

MAKCuMG: There are two main reasons I think it performs better than the QT: my #1 reason is sheer preference for large hookahs over small, held in light of a recent study showing that smoke from smaller hookahs contains more carbon monoxide. Secondly, I have a problem with the hose ports on all Mya hookahs -- that threaded connection only allows so much air to pass through at once. Most traditional style Egyptian hookahs have a wider airway (the KM most certainly does) and thus can take advantage of wider hoses. The QT does hit pretty nice though.

New Khalil Maamons are hollow metal, same as the other Egyptian stuff on the market, whereas they used to be solid. HC got a great deal on some of the solid ones about 10 months ago and I bought 20 from them and sold them at the lounge. Very well constructed pipes. Their old thread wrapped leather hoses were good as well, a little light, but very good hitting.

Since then, the hoses have become bigger and heavier, but the same way carrying 10lbs of newspaper makes you 10lbs heavier...not more durable. They also (the two that I tried) had a nasty chemical flavor that seemed to never fade. The new pipes seemed constructed Alright, but of similar weight and quality material to other Egyptian stuff and no more brass core...steel core. So why pay a premium price??? No reason at all.

George said he was going to be getting some in soon of the all-brass pipes...I don't know what they are going to sell for...$120 may be a good guess...might be a little high.

T: What do you mean by hollow metal? I assume the space between the hydroformed steel and the inner stem is hollow... is that what you're talking about? If so, I never knew they made them solid...

The Khalil Mamoun pipes currently being sold at HC are brass core though. Much heavier than other Egyptian pipes I've handled.

Like I said about the hose, the chemical flavor in mine faded after about 6-8 smokes. I dedicated it to kashmir flavors and that's all I taste in it now.

Brass: Doesn't rust and tends to be "softer" so that if damaged, it bends (and can be gently bent back)
Steel:Rusts, has a slight flavor imparted by the rust and if damaged, frequently cracks, although it is harder to damage than brass.

Overall, if a company goes to the effort and expense of making brass or brass-core hookahs (solid brass being better, of course, brass-cores are just what they sound like...with steel on the outside), they generally construct the hookahs better and they smoke better and last longer. That being said, there are some very nicely constructed steel hookahs and some poorly constructed brass hookahs (although the incidence of poorly constructed brass hookahs has almost dropped off to zero).

Another thing that gets me is the quality of the stem port. A good stem port is a one-piece cast or machines piece that the hose plugs into. If you see a hose port that has seems or solders on it, its clearly a poor construction. Approximately 80% of hookah shank problems I see (especially ones that the average person doesn't notice) involve poor construction on a poorly constructed hose port.
