How Many Different Ways Are There To Pack A Bowl?

Recommended Posts

I've noticed many people discussing different ways to pack a bowl, but I really only know of two. You either put the shisha above the bowl line, or below the bowl line. Then there's the "blowing from the bottom" trick.
However, I have a tobacco pipe and the way you pack one of those its quite specific (over the top, pack it down to half, over the top, down to 3/4, bit more on top if I remember correctly).

So does anyone have a complicated bowl packing ritual like the pipe one, or is essentially just placing the shisha in? I've never done the 'over the top' method because I hate lifting up the tinfoil and seeing a giant black puck stuck to it. Everything seems to go well when things arent touching. Anyhow, I'll sometimes push down with a thumb to gently make space between the foil and shisha and thats about it.

Sorry if I got long winded by the end, but whats your packing ritual? And which other ways have you heard of? Edited by L'Oignon

... and it tastes really nasty if you have a particularily jucy tobacco that has dripped down to the bottom... huh.gif

I usually stick a japanese-style chopstick (pointed) in the center hole while I pack. It leaves a bore though the tobacco to help air flow.

I've got a tip which is to not blow to hard into the bowl because the first time i tried this i must of blew to hard because my hookah never started hitting. I finally took the foil off and there was tons of shisha burned to the foil. What i do now is pack my bowl then blow through it and then place the foil over top that way i can make sure i didn't blow the shisha too much.

I found that when I am packing my bowl, if I take the time to separate each small clump (or, with some of the longer cut tobacco, each individual leaf), and let them fall into the bowl, the smoking session is much better. Sometimes, it takes me 10 minutes to pack a bowl (usually only that long if I am mixing flavours). It's totally worth it to take the time to make sure the tobacco is 'fluffy' in the bowl.

In my opinion, blowing through the bottom of the bowl is unnecessary, because if you take the time to pack a bowl really well, and then blow, it disrupts all your hard work. Plus, it causes the tinfoil to loosen a bit, and that means when the weight of a coal is pressing the foil closer to the tobacco, it'll burn and that is never a good thing.

I don't think you ever want to pack the tobacco above the rim of the bowl, espacially if you're using foil. That's just asking to burn the shisha. The point is to not have your coals in contact with the shisha; direct contact leads to burning and harshness. I find that using a screen makes it easier to avoid burning (BTW, I used to use foil). As for blowing into the bowl, I test the pull after I pack a bowl. If it seems like i have to pull harder, I blow into the bowl to loosen things up a bit. Hope this helps.

Don't over peck your bowl meaning over the top cause this will only burn the shisha. Pack it loosely and this will help with the airflow. A good tip after packing the shisha is to blow it from below gently to give it a nice airflow. Peace thats how i usually pack my shisha smile.gif hope this will help you

How many different ways are there to pack a bowl...

How many people smoke hookah?

Its like asking how many ways of making a sandwich are there?

In general, the type, cut and wetness of the tobacco you are using will make a large impact on the way its packed. The smaller and wetter the tobacco, the looser and less you want to put in the bowl. The drier or larger the cut, the more you want to put in.
