I Finally Figured It Out

Recommended Posts

Last night at the beach house was the first time I've ever started my own hookah. I knew what I was supposed to do, thnks to you guys, but I just coulden't do it. The first bowl, Starbuzz Candy went all right, but I still burnt it at the beginning and didn't get much flavor. The next four bowls progressivly worse, partly because I was becoming progressivly inebriated.

Tonight, I was invited over to a little shindig at one of my classmate's house and my buddy asked if I could bring the hookah. I decided to try something other than just normal foil and normal double foil covers. I went with a normal bottom layer of foil, then I made a little ring of foil to put around the holes, and then another piece of foil over that with holes poked inside the ring area. I'll post pics soon if you guys want them. It started off slow and I decided to light up another coal with the butane torch, which was a mistake. There was too much heat off of that and it started getting harsh. After that little error and running out of butane, the night went much smoother and it was better than any bar I've been to yet.

I'm not sure if this is a blessing or a burden, but alot of people from school now know I'm the only one with a hookah and they're all hooked.

Well I can't comment on starbuzz. But I've never used more than a single layer of foil and life is good smile.gif

What type of coals are you using? And is it possible you are over-packing the bowl so that foil sits right onto the tobacco?

Also ensure your foil is shiny side down. I found this helps a bit.

But shisha is a bit like driving. You can be taught to drive, but you only master the skill once you are out on your own biggrin.gif

Good luck!

I'm using those Japanese silver easy lights, usually one coal. I made sure the shiny side was down, that the shisha wasn't touching the foil, but it did burn with both the starbuzz and layalina.

I think I figured out the heat management thing now and everything will go smoothly. I just hope I don't have to go back to the beach house with the family so I can smoke some more.

Post the picture so that people can learn or advise you what to do. I also use double foil so the shisha do burn so quickly. Keep up the good work you'll master the art of hookah my friend. Have a nice sessions smile.gif

Alrighty heres the double foil with a ring.

You'll need two squares of foil and a rectangle. The rectangle is used to make the ring.

The bottom layer of foil needs plenty holes because of the extra space between. Fold the rectangle lengthwise starting at one side and fold it by a half inch each time. When you end up with a strip half an inch wide fold it once more so that it is a quarter inch wide. Make it into a ring barely larger than the area of holes on the bottom layer of foil (slip on end of it into the other end of the strip). Wrap the last square of foil over the bowl and poke a normal amount of holes within the ring area. Put one or two Japanese coals on top, depending on the weather conditions and your shisha.

Enjoy.

Do you have a metal bowl? Cause that might be why it's always burning. Metal bowls are really hard to manage heat with. I would suggest a new bowl if it's metal.

hey where are you at in Oregon? I'm in the Eugene area. I've got a pretty good group of folks that get together for hookah all the time. Get in touch with me if you wanna try a whole bunch of new stuff.

There was a video on youtube with some german kids who do that same ring trick and they seem to be having a pretty good session. Dont remember how many coals they were using, but you should try to find it. All I can remember is that they were german, they had a mini-mya, and they were smoking Layalina watermelon. Maybe watching that can help you sort things out

I guess this method has its pro's and con's:
-2 foils, that would mean less heat burning the flavour (negative)
-Although, it could be more insulated as a pot with less places for heat to escape is a better one.(positive)
-It's more effort.(negative)

Nice idea though, might give it a try some time.

i tried this method once and i have no problem with burning the shisha quickly. It's just time consuming. I place 2 QL and broke them into 4 peices and place them on the outer ring of the bowl. I get huge cloud of smoke and no harsh taste. I learn this method from a german guy through his video on you tube. Try searching for it. For the harshness it because the shisha is touching the foil. [i guess this is the case] i hope you'll have a great session later peace smile.gif

If you're smoking outside that could explain it. I've kinda felt, at least with Tangiers, that how the foil is poked with holes makes little difference.

Are you cleaning your hookah?! That could definitely explain declining results.
