newsman
I spent the weekend in Toronto at Anime North, shooting segments for a documentary I'm doing on fan conventions.I was relaxing by my car last night, in the parking lot of the Toronto Congress Center, smoking a bowl of AF strawberry in my Bambino, when an Ontario Provincial Police car pulls up next to me and shines a light in my face. The conversation went something like this:OPP officer: Can you step over here a minute?Me: Sure, officer...OPP officer: What are you smoking there?Me: It's a hookah.OPP officer: A hookah? What's a hookah? Me: It's an middle-eastern waterpipe. It's used to smoke tobacco.OPP officer: It looks like a bong...Me: Yeah, I've heard that before. Trust me it's just tobacco.OPP officer: Yeah, I guess if you had anything else in there, you would have scrambled to hide it when we pulled up. Just do me favor. Keep it a little more out of sight, eh? People might not understand.Me: Sure thing. Thanks officer. How cool was that? My hat's off to the Ontario Provincial Police for their courtesy and understanding. It probably wouldn't have gone down that way in my neck of the woods. leadpipecinch21
in my experiences that was generally how it went. I've had to uncover the bowl and stuff to show the tobacco, but generally as long as you're sincere and willing to work with the cop, you're going to be fine. I think he meant that people that didn't understand hookah is would end up calling the police. And he was probably right if that's what he meant. They surely wouldn't stop to ask themselves. I know what you mean, though. It's frustrating. Still, you have to take baby steps in educating people sometimes, and then maybe eventually enlightenment will occur.Sorry if this sounded a little incoherent. I'm a little tired from driving back to NJ for 9 hours in the rain...

I'm a little tired from driving back to NJ for 9 hours in the rain...Ouch, 9 hours in the rain?! I feel ya, man! I had to drive from Tampa, FL to Houston, TX with 60 MPH winds and rain so hard I had a visibility of 1/8 of a mile at best. Not to mention night driving due to the fact that it's a 17 hour drive. It does make you super tired and super fatigued. Anywho, the best thing you can do is keep your hookah out. if you hide it, you have a hose going to your mouth with you exhaling mass amounts of smoke. That doesn't look suspicious? Would to me if I were a cop. Just my opinion.TX
