Hookah As A Fad

Actually, even though it seems slowly... there are certain part of the country that it has EXPLODED in... I think that it might be a tad bit of a fad for some but it's popularity regardless is becoming alot more common place

This is very true. This is just the beginning. Some parts of the country (U.S., since we have world-wide users smile.gif) don't even know what hookah is. They have yet to start, let alone boom.

Well I mean a fad explodes in popularity and then completely disappears. I think as far as the US is concerned its initial explosion of popularity will subside but what will be left is a permanent allbeit smaller community of enthusiasts. Sort of like low carb food, the initial craziness is over (thank god), but the products are still a permanent part of any health food store.

I've no idea what the low-carb thing is... But...

I think a 'fad' is somewhat accurate. Why does a 33 year old white guy from England smoke hookah?
Why is hookah so popular amongst white middle-America?

We can hardly claim cultural heratige can we?

So in some respects fad is an accurate word.

It's interesting, even for the areas where hookah is thought of as culturally indigenous, it's extreme uptick in popularity occurred in the 90's following the introduction of Maassel. So, it looks like a fad even in those areas.

You learn something new every day! I didn't realize it got popular in the 90's.

if you dont own a hookah, set it up yourself, try different brands, and try different techniques, while being respectful to the culture it came from, then yeah, you are a fad.

I somewhat agree, although, some people just can't afford to buy all their own stuff. Some people are on tight budgets. I mean think about what fads are. You gotta own a certain item to be "cool" so to say that if you don't own you're own hookah is kinda wrong if you ask me.

Well... My friends smoked out of my hookah and loved it. One asked me for help on finding his own hookah and treats the entire matter with a great deal of respect, and I'm just peachy with that.

Another friend was with me when I tried hookah for the first time a year ago. I got my own a good 6 months after that and was ranting and raving about how much I loved smoking out of it, and my friend's boyfriend voiced his opinion on how he absolutely hated it. He didn't want to hear anything more on the matter, and thought I was not doing the right thing with it like all his other friends did with their hookahs. My friend, for some reason, adopted his opinion on the matter, that hookahs were evil. Time after time I explained the matter, because it seriously disturbed me that they would find something I found so pure and good so offensive. Finally they must have started believing me because it was just dropped and peace settled. In a strange turn of events, my friend now has not one but TWO hookahs within a week's period of getting permission from her bf (they share an apartment). Really now, wtf? Why the sudden change of heart?

i agree with what your saying rootdown. I know a bunch of co-workers love to smoke hookah and go to all the bars all the time and smoke the shittiest stash of tobacco and say its the best (we have a not so great selection of lounges to go to in my area). They are most definitely following a fad as they can easily purchase their own and get some way better tobacco than paying 17 bucks for a bowl of stale nakhla. i tell them all the time its better to buy your own and hang out at someones house but they like the vibe of a lounge and the whole social aspect of it. which is cool i only go 2 a lounge to get out of the house and scope some hot ladies but when it comes to actually enjoying a nice session id rather sit at home or go to my buddies house and watch a movie or have decent conversation. in other words they are most def following a fad, smoking for almost 6 years i have learned to appreciate the culture behind our wonderful waterpipe and also become a fiend like the rest of ya!

That's pretty messed up.

i believe if someone only goes to hookah lounges, then they might just like to go for the "club feel", not really caring what the hell they are doing

I have to disagree. I mean yes some see it as something cool to do like an oxygen bar, but I smoked in a lounge for 6 months before buying my 2 hookahs. I understood the culture. I just didn't have the means to buy all my own stuff.

if you smoke in a lounge for 6 months isnt that enough to buy a hookah? lol smile.gif

i think after the first 2 missed sessions you would be on your way to getting your own hookah.

i never smoked in a lounge before, i was introduced to the hookah by my egyptian friend. he had a real oldschool egyptian hookah with nakhla.

thinking back, it was terrible! very harsh!

good times

Actually, no. At the time I couldn't afford to smoke everyday form my own hookah dishing out that much money at once. So I had to finance my love for hookah and smoked in a lounge. It's a $10 cover charge for unlimited hookahs, shisha, and coals all night. So only $10 a time for a few hours. A few times a month, once I got out of my financial bind, I bought 2 hookahs. I'm loaded now! lol

see what im saying tho? you could've bought a $30 hookah, but the atmosphere is what makes paying to go to a hookah lounge worth it

Yea I do see what you are saying. I like going to lounges even though I have my own stuff. Because I do like the atmosphere. But I also like to play poker with the guys and smoke from the hookah. It all depends what I'm in the mood for. Either way, they are both very relaxing and enjoyable.

It can't be a fad until it starts getting real media coverage.

What will kill hookahs, if they are to die, is the profiteers making absurd amounts of money on hookahs and related items. Prices will drop down in price competition, if it will survive. Of course, I've been saying that for 5 years and smoking hookah for 9.

Well me personally. I first got into hookah because of friends ( not white ) and I enjoyed it. Then once I got a hookah I did more research and such and got more into the culture. I believe hookah should be universal. Eastern cultures take offense when other people besides people from the east use parts of their culture ( from my experiences ). We are humans we should all share ideas and cultures. Open source life tongue.gif . Any who happy smoking.
