I dont really see rust in the stem as much as a health problem, its more of a "quality of your hookah" problem. But what most people here are saying is that rust in the hose is a problem.....and you dont have to see the rust particles for them to actually be there (although I know that you were just pointing out that the rust from your stem wouldnt really fall though the stem, into the water, then through your 6" foot hose and into your lungs). It damages your lungs by cutting them up and such, which im sure everbody knows already.

What people are suggesting is that these plastic hoses are alot safer and cheaper.....so its like a win-win situation.

Oh, I know, and I agree that a rusted hose is not the best thing in the world, but I don't think it's as huge an issue as it's often made out to be. Above all, I'd just argue that the actual smoke is considerably more dangerous.

The problems that I have are that there are some issues which are being conflated. First, the hose is separate from the stem and the two issues should be considered separately. Even if you accept that the hose rusting could potentially pose a major health threat, I don't see how one can really make an argument that certain stem types somehow represent a threat. "Cheap hookahs are made from crap metal and soldered together. They may look cool, swivel, nice painted bottle....bottom line....they rust and corrode and you'll be breathing in all those metals. (lead, nickel, etc) Majority of the metals comes from the hose." - if the majority of the metals come from the hose, then why does s/he mention that the cheap hookahs rust and corrode and "you'll be breathing in all those metals"? It just seems like an empty health-related argument for getting more expensive hookahs when all you need is a different (and in fact, less expensive) hose to avoid the supposed issues.

Second, s/he seems to conflate the heavy metals in the smoke, which come from the Maassel itself, with oxidized metal bits coming from rusted hoses. Heavy metals are present in all hookah smoke, even if no rust is present.

Third, s/he seems to conflate the few posts that they have apparently read with "pretty much all posts" smile.gif . Heavy metals and plastic hoses etc. have been discussed multiple times over many months here, and many of these issues have already been brought up.

QFT.

Smoking is unhealthy, no matter what you smoke, or what you smoke out of.

I so wish this wasnt true sad.gif .....

I actually haven't really paid much attention to the rust factor in my hose or hookah stem (which I agree with mgcsinc-it isn't as bad as many make it out to be).....it just doesnt cross my mind while I smoke, but just incase I think i'll get the rust proof/washable hoses from now on. Like Kae said, smoking is unhealthy, i'd just like to try to keep my hobby as least unhealthy as I can.

Sounds sensible enough smile.gif

If people can get plastic hoses and brass hookahs that they really like and that are within their price range, go for it, for sure.

There's a non sequitur in what you've said. In terms of rust, you're talking about hoses, but then you continue on to talk about buying brass hookah stems. At least, I think that's what you mean, because I've never seen a brass-interior hose on the market. I personally see no problem (aside from aesthetics) with my stem corroding somewhat, because I have never seen chunks of oxidized metal leave my stainless steel pipe at all, let alone get through the water and all the way up my circuitous hose.

yeah, stem = brass, hose = plastic. As for your stem not being brass, just wait. my old was completely corroded out. I guess it's really what you can afford.

if I washed my hose and its now got particles and such coming out everytime I try to clear it does that mean its rusted out and I need new ones now?

Yeah, it can't be healthy... if your a lil short on cash i swear do what I did to one of my hoses... go to lowes and get 5 feet of plastic/vinyl tubing for $1... then cut off the endpieces off the hose and attach to the tubing.. its kind of cool to see the clear tube fill with smoke too

Yep....it does. Get rid of it. Rip the tube off, keep the wooden ends, and go buy some plastic tubing from home depot, menards, lowes, or any hardware store. You'll probably need some circle clamp rings, look at the picture on my hose above.

I'm glad to see that there are a lot more sensible responses to the feverish panicked post that started this off :-D

Breathing in rust probably isn't good for you, but I've not seen any hard evidence to suggest that it is as horrible as some people will have you think...

Truth be told, brass DOES corrode, ever cleaned out your hookah and found green stuff? Ever seen the statue of liberty?

The point about brass instruments as proof that brass is safer is just silly, when was the last time you saw someone playing the trumpet by SUCKING through it?? You blow through instruments, you suck through hoses... there are other reasons that they are made out of brass than the health factor (and this doesn't even take into account a whole collection of instruments that aren't made of brass (clarinet, oboe hello?)

People have asked for the proof, and no one has presented anything other than "it just seems bad, doesn't it?"

Now on to stainless... real stainless doesn't corrode, that's the whole deal with stainless, following your argument, it makes more sense to buy a true stainless stem (if yours is rusting someone lied to you). For the ever elusive proof : http://www.wonderquest.com/moth-stainless-steel-kite.htm

Regarding hoses... you can list all the reasons you want about why rusty hoses are DANGEROUS POISION DEATH HOSES, but at the end of the day getting a mouth full of orange or black grit isn't my idea of a good smoke... that is enough reason to replace the hose. If you're worried about cleaning the hose or saving money then mod yours or buy the washable hoses... worrying about something funky growing them is kinda silly, if you are really concerned then submerge/fill them in water that is 1 cap ful of bleach to 1 gallon warm water. you'll need to rinse them really well when you are done but that will kill anything growing in them...

huh.gif I guess I just don't get all the hype

I cant figure out how to connect the old tips to the vinyl tubes, help please?

hmm it should be pretty straight forward... Did you try sticking the ends of your old tips into the tubes??

I'm not trying to impersonate a mod here but, this convo is kindof off topic for this discussion and this chat area... and its sounding like it's about to get into nitty gritty modding details It might be time to go to the how-to funhouse with your questions... if its not blatantly (and painfuly) obvious how you would do this I'd send in pictures and a complete description of the issue... and ask for more help...

I modded mine to clear 1/2in fish tank hose, and aside from being the simplest mod I've ever done(on anything) (in my whole life), its cool watching the smoke travel through the hose....
