Anyone Ever Dealt With A Broken Base With Mya Before?

Recommended Posts

So 3 weeks ago a friend brought me a Mya Hookah from California while he was on Vacation. It's a Clear crystal based one with a nice chrome stem with some cloisonne on it. Last nite I went to smoke out of it and when I put the water and ice in it the base cracked all the way around about 2 inches from the top I emptied and set it to the side of the sink. Today I went to move it upstairs to my room to take pictures and it shattered in my hand(slicing me open in the process). Now I'm stuck with a $300 hookah with a broken base that shouldn't have broken simply from ice water... Anyone know the chances of me getting a new base from Mya even though it wasn't purchased directly from them?

Unfortunately so, I'm gonna try and get some pics up here soon and then give Mya a call/email in the morning. After examining the pieces of the broken base more one side of the base is about 1/4" thick, the other side in the exact same spot is about 1/2" thick, big difference if you ask me...

Dear Victim026

I would like to inform you that the broken glass showing on the images posted is NOT a MYA Crystal Base. The cuts and design is not the same please see the images below of a MYA Crystal.

There are lots of companies copying our products and I would like to note that we do sell stems, hoses, burner and other hookah parts separately. Some companies use our stems on there own glass base and that is making customer thinking that this is a MYA Hookah.

We understand how frustrating when a customer pay so much for a product thinking that it is original and then find out that what they purchased was a copy and not the real MYA.

Please contact us via phone and we will do our best to give you the best price on new MYA Crystal Base.

Should you have more questions please do not hesitate to contact us at 866 277-9MYA

Thank you

Is that glass, or is it CRYSTAL? It looks like crystal.

Crystal as I mentioned up in the very first part of the original post.....

Yeah, crystal tends to get that prism effect that regular cut glass doesn't get. Mya, you make BEAUTIFUL stuff, I just wish those base-breaking threads didn't come up, and that your washable hoses actually were washable.

1. I've seen that jar in several places, I've seen it attached to Myas, but as the man says, its real common to connect other jars to Mya stems. It is crystal, at least the ones that I've seen similar to it are crystal.

2. Are you sure the stem is Mya?

3. Anytime you put ice and water in a jar, you risk it doing exactly what it did. Why do you assume that its not appropriate for it to break from ice water? Any thermal expansion/contraction can cause imperfections to fracture. The more significant the thermal change, the likelier a fracture (s) will occur.

4. If you intend to use ice water in your jar, I would recommend using a standard, poopy hookah jar. When it breaks, you won't be upset. You won't be throwing down $100, either.

5. I looked in the accessories area of Myasaray.com and didn't find crystal jars listed separately anywhere. Oh, he said call them. My bad.

1. I've never seen this vase anywhere(Apparently I've seen the real ones though)

2. Yes I'm sure it's a mya stem it's stamped all over it.

3. I would expect a quality product to last through a little ice water, but seeing how it's a fake then I'm not surprised.

4. Why would I use a poopy jar when I have a beautiful hookah I can use? You would think the higher quality model would hold up better then a "poopy jar" anyways....

5. Yes I have to call him when I get a chance....

honestly, i kinda feel what sonthert is saying.

i smoke out of poopy hookahs simply because im too afraid to risk braeking anything nice.

i smoke out of an old acrylic because i dont care if anything happens to it. my crystal hookah is in my room for decoration.

shrug, maybe im just weird that way smile.gif

Well then I guess we differ in opinions, I'm not gonna drop good cash on something just to sit there, If I buy a $300 Hookah I'm gonna smoke the hell outta it, likewise goes if i were to buy a $10 mil car or a $500,000 Guitar..... It was made to be used, not to sit on a shelf serving no purpose....

Fake has nothing to do with it. A crystal jar is a crystal jar. There may be differences in quality, but there's no telling. Its not a drinking glass (which really might be a risk, too), its a hookah jar. There's a whole bunch of people that would never think that somebody would even put ice in the jar, let alone make a highly resilient glass for that eventuality. Just because you assume its axiomatic, customary and reasonable to put ice in a jar doesn't mean it is.

There are many vendors who buy and sell Mya stems separate from the jars. I am under the impression Mya buys theirs separately and attaches them, too. Hookah jars, crystal or otherwise are not generally meant for putting ice in. Getting a pyrex-borosilicate jar is impossible since Hookah Brothers went out of business. Thus, anytime you put ice in a jar, its a risk.

I wouldn't assume that a more expensive jar would hold up better. That logic is for Mercedes Benz dealers trying to cover up for the lowest reliability numbers in the American Automotive market (yet, some of the highest prices). Crystal is very soft, not as thermally resilient as Pyrex. Therefore, a Pyrex or borosilicate glass although cheaper, will be far better or your application. You don't always get what you pay for. Also, crystal scratches far more easily, it is the softest of the common glasses (if I remember correctly), thats why you normally see heavily etched crystal, a plain crystal piece would show scratches and look shitty very quickly.

This isnt about price, this is about quality, I thought I had a MYA which in my opinion is a quality hookah.... Which I would expect to hold up to Ice.... Your really looking way way way to far into this Eric. This discussion should be about fake Mya's not about what glass has such and such properties and about how I shouldn't be putting Ice water in my vase.... Because if that's the case then we prolly shouldn't put water in them at all... Edited by Victim026

i think what hes trying to say is that even mya crystal could still have heat related (too cold from the ice) problems and that their crystal is nothing special, regular crystal... Edited by Scoop

Closer to what Scoop said.

Mya or not has nothing to do with it. I think if you put ice-water in a hookah jar, you need to be reasonably sure that there is a finite chance of it shattering which is higher than if you put room temperature water in it. [Proof omitted] smile.gif

Where did you buy it from...did you contact them?

Edit: Did they sell the pipe to you as a Mya? I'd be pissed at the vendor/store. Edited by Sonthert
