Really Lost On What Charcoal To Buy Next

Recommended Posts

I am totally lost on what charcoal to buy, for some reason i just dont know what is good or not and would love some opinions. I have used diamante hookah finger coals for regular charcoal and have to say they were really messy, for easy lights i dont remember the brand but it took forever to light.

I highly reccomend any japanese-style coal. They're harder to light than quicklights, not quite as hard as naturals, and in perfect little squares so you can easily distribute heat.

I agree with Calcartman to get the japanese style charcoal. But make sure its comes with 96 pieces in a black box. They make 2 kinds one bye diamante and the other by rolland. But their not as messy, each stick has 4 little squares that are easy to separate but they take about 4-5 minutes on a stove.

For quicklights, the ones that are great to me is the dodo instant lights.

I personally prefer the silver-coated "japanese" style coals. Lighting them is not hard, but takes a little patience. Here is the best way:

Break off two charcoals, and set them on top of the foil with about 1/8" separation. Use a "blowtorch" type butane lighter, and place the flame in the space between the coals. Then focus the flame along the corners of the coals, gently drawing the flame back and forth. Keep the flame on the coals for about 20 seconds.

Draw on the hookah a couple of times, the initial smoke will be a little harsh. Exhaust the smoke from the reservoir, by blowing gently.

Let the coals burn for a couple of minutes, and then resume smoking. After 2-3 minutes, flip the coals over, and then light the newly exposed corners of the coals. About 20 Seconds of drawing the flame across the corners should be fine.

Japanese coals burn steady, and have no flavor at all.

This is a crazy ass way of lighting these coals!

Most folks i know will use a blow-torch style burner and something appriate to sit them in (I use an old frying pan)

Heat one side until they give a dull glow.
Turn over.
Heat the other side until they glow bright red.

Then gently blow on them until the silver coating comes off.

Put the side WITHOUT the silver onto the foil/tobacco.

Smoke biggrin.gif

hey man get jap coals, if u can afford dun get the chinese knock offs. the real deal lights faster, silver flakes off easier, leave less of a taste(my opinion) and suppose to be better for u. their called golden jap coals by canary imports

The real Japanese coals (Canary Goldens) are awesome, but I can't stand the Easy-Lite brand. They don't burn like Japanese coals at all -- much too hot, slight coal taste, harder to light, tons of ash...

I tried the Stargate coals everyone was raving about and didn't care for them either. For now I stick to either 3 Kings 40mm or the Japanese Goldens, when I can afford them. I also want to try these Ahkla coals, as well as the Al Fakher coals once they are available.

For QL coal i recommend you three kings brand 33mm. For silver-coated coal go with Eazy lite but they light longer than the 3 kings but it last longer that the QL. Peace have a nice day smile.gif

I agree with Symptom, the Canary Goldens are the best. My problem is I can't spend $20 for one box. You can get three boxes of the easy-lites for the same price. They aren't all that bad as long as you light them all the way, preferably outside. (They let off a smell when they light)
