mrmonk7663
Alright, i did a search and I found one post that mentioned that 4 Japanese coals are reccomended for a Medium Funnel Bowl. Is this the general concensus? I Lit two picecs (of the four) this weekend with a butane torch, placed it on my bowl across from each other, and I couldn't even get the tobacco to start. I got aggrivated and wanted to smoke, so I pulled out my Starlights and popped two of them on and removed the Japanese Coals. This worked wonderfully like always. I would like to get these Japanese coals working though. What I need to know is A. How many to use B. Placement, which I assume a Cross Shape would be ideal with 4 coals, C. Is it possible to get the same desnsity smoke with the Japanese Coals compared to my Starlights, all other factors being equal? Thanks alot for the help. Oh, and I got the Japanese Gold Canary Coals or whatever, the good ones that are reccomended.Mike
chinamon
my guess would be if you arent getting enough smoke with two coals then try 3. if three isnt enough then try 4.just an idea...
mrmonk7663
I had ZERO smoke with 2 Japanese coals. I know I can increase coals and try more but I want to see what successful people are doing so I don't waste time and coals if I don't have to. They didn't seem hot enough to start the tobacco on my phunnel bowl.
chinamon
did you light the coals fully? glowing red on all sides and silver coating is all gone?
Hannibal
QUOTE (mrmonk7663 @ Jun 25 2007, 05:33 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>I had ZERO smoke with 2 Japanese coals. I just started using Jap coals (although I have the Chinese made ones) and they are far better than any of the QL i've used. Using 3 burned my shisha, but I was using a regular Mya bowl. I dropped down to 2 and I got my hookah smoking like a champ.I use an electric hot plate to light mine, put it on medium heat and the coils light them up perfectly after about 2-3 minutes. mrmonk7663
Yah, they were lit. I used a big butane torch to light them. The surface area on the coals seemed to be reduced a decent bit by the time they were lit. IE they seemed smaller once I got them lit. I'll try again this weekend, but I know for a fact that my Starlight Quicklights burn way hotter than these things. I have also read on here that the Jap Coals don't produce nearly the amount of heat as other coals, but that is one of the reasons they are better for health reasons, so it is said. If anyone else has any input please feel free to chime in, I could use it. Thanks everyone!!!
Scoop
medium phunnel, 3 coals is near perfect. 4 coal is a little too much...i started triangle them on the bowl
aldonb1
hmm i would say it depends on the tobacco you are using...if you are using:Tangiers - lower heat is better because the tobacco is designed to be used at a much lower temp. Japs do this wonderfully i do 4 japs on a fully packed medium phunnel bowl in an X formation. (1 at each end). I will usually use 3 to finish of the bowl after those 4 die out.Other tobacco - starlights are fine because they burn much hotter and many other tobaccos need this super heat to get going. (I'd say u'd need more than 2 unless u are using a small standard bowl.Wel`p thats my 2 cents.
mrmonk7663
From the way it is sounding is basically these Jap coals aren't going to do me much good unless I smoke Tangiers? As far as more than 2 starlights, 2 work fine on my medium bowl. When they die out I simply put two more in the unheated areas.Mike
Scoop
i use the chinese jap ones and they work with any mix. same heat works pretty much the same...
mrmonk7663
Alright. I'll try 3-4 coals tomorrow when I get back to the Casa in Houston. I forgot my Coals and i'm in College Station now grrr. Everytime I come here I forget what I need. Even my favorite QL Starlights I forgot, now I have to use my extra 3 kings :-( Haha, thanks for all the help everyone!!! lazria
i use Japanese ones all the time, my prefered coal. 2 for a standard/MYA/or smiley bowl, 3-4 for the med phunnel.phunnels are picky creatures anyways - coals amount & type can be as important as the amount and placement of holes in the foil. For Tangiers I go crazy with holes - as many as the foil can take. With everything else (mainly I use Layalina & Rommans in a phunnel, smiley's too) I use one outer ring and one inner ring of holes. 3 coals spaced evenly ((or 4 at corners))... let sit for 3-5 min, rotate then start smoking.also, try using a windcover (specially with 2-3 coals) on a phunnel - it helps concentrate the heat to warm the shisha to smoking temp. Also, i use Smiley coals which burn HOT - those take pracise(sp) using, I can sometimes get the right amount of heat w/ 2 pieces and sometimes it's too much. Sonthert
Japanese coals burn cooler, so they take more time to get the bowl to heat up with high-water content tobaccos. 4-5 might be the right amount for High-water tobaccos. 3-4 is good for Tangiers. mrmonk7663
Thanks!! I'm gonna go with four this afternoon after work and I will try to report back this evening. I'm also trying to get the video for the other post I said I would put up. Thanks again. Oh, and I got some Tangiers on the way :-)
Johnny_D
4 is perfect with a medium size bowl & Layalina. And I use 8 in total as the bowl will last a good 2 hours.Just place the coals in 'fresh' positions at the interlude JD
Calcartman
Depending on how wet the tobacco is, i start with 4, and then pull of one when it starts to cook too much, and put it back on when it cools. Some shishas i can leave all 4 on, some will burn.
