Apollo
Hey, i was just wondering if the screw on stems wear out, because from looking, mya doesnt sell a whole lot of variety as far as stem design goes, and if they wear out at all, that would suck
MAKCuMG
LOL...mya has more stems than any other company..if you are going only by what you see on their website, its about 15% of what they actually offer. Check sites like hookah-shisha.com to get an idea.
spoolinspoon
I've had mine for over a year and it still looks new. As long as you doin't cross tread it I don't see any problem. If it does end up messing up i'm sure they will replace it or you can get a gasket for the stem and get another base that isn't screw on.

hooky1742
looking at mya's website it seems as though it is only the acrylic based hookah's that have screw fitting stems. Are there any glass base or bohemian base mya's with screw fit? If so i might seriously consider buying one, as i only hav a cheapy pipe which works, but not brilliantly, it was just good enough to get me into shisha. SmokeMojo
I have never had a problem with the Screw on Stems wearing out. Mya uses quality metals and usually silicone type seals which tend to have good longetivity. I know that a lot of lounges PREFER the Mya brand hookahs because of the screw on stems, sturdiness/air tightness/ consistancy of the design. They are usually very easy to clean and work with too.The thing that is different about Mya screw-ons is that the Stem is the Male piece and the base is the female piece. On many other Chinese and or Modern screw-ons the threading on the base is male and the stem is female. I have found that this design isn't quite as air tight and that the tops of the bases have a tendency to crack/chip/break. Not only do the Mya screw ons have those positives, the threading is also VERY small compared to the generic screw-ons. The small threading allows a tighter and more precise fit.Grommet sealed are nice as well. The ones made by Mya and modern/chinese manufacturers are a bit more air tight and have a "glove like" fit since they are machined. Whereas handmade egyptians and syrians often have the "leaning tower of shisha" problem. The grommets are a lot harder to standardize with hand blown glass because the diameters are slightly different on all hand blown bases. The acrylics are great and Mya makes bohemian glass screw on bases as well, so you can always upgrade to glass if it tickles your hookah fancy. hooky1742
so your saying if i buy a mya acrylic with screw on base, i can upgrade to a nice bohemian glass screw on base at some stage when i have saved up enough money? Thats awesome Thanks for the info!
SmokeMojo
You sure can, and I believe if you don't entirely dig the screw on base, they are even able to fit the grommet/gasket bases through Mya. You'll just have to get a gasket from them that fits too. But I still like the screw ons
Sonthert
A customer of mine always had perpetual problems with the screw on (glass jar) leaking air a little. Edited June 28, 2007 by Sonthert

So far I've been lucky enough to have pretty flawless seals. Of course not everyone may have the same luck
Sonthert
It seems to work better without a gasket...for whatever reason.

The gasket on my vortex is very thin and it is made of a clear soft silicone. The gasket on my model from about 2 years ago has a thicker gasket and it is black and more rubbery. I could see where that one could cause problems because I smoke it without the gasket sometimes and it works just the same.

Looks like you put the stem and base in the freezer? Or chilled them at least? I'm afraid to put my Bohemian base in my freezer for fear of cracking. How is the glass on that base compared to a standard egyptian? I'm stealing your money jug idea.. maybe my roommates won't smoke all my shisha then. Erica
The glass is a little bit thinner than the normal glass vases mya makes for some reason.. I dont know if it was just this style where the glass was thinner... or if all the newer hookahs are like that (I know thats what has been going around)But I like the screw ons because... if for some reason you have a few people over.. andddd a newb is there or something and they move the hookah chances are, they are going to grab it by the stem... and well since its screwed on, that means to broken vases...I also liked to take this pipe to the hookah bar.... because when it gets crowed and I need to move my pipe from one seat to another or like... move it while im sitting down I can just grab the stem... instead on the vase

Maybe I'll just leave the cheaper stuff laying out then I've noticed the same thing with the new Mya's.. It doesn't bug me because they're not too thin, they just make me take better care of the base, and I guess the whole hookah overall, a little bit better. My Vortex smokes better than my older models, I can honestly say that. I'm probably going to be getting another Mya before the end of the summer.. They're just too secksy. So do you freeze that base? I'm kind of afraid to just because the glass seems a bit more fragile..
