Acrylic = Plastic?

Recommended Posts

Without fail, whenever I break out my hookah (a nicer one than any of my friends, who all have shitty ebay chinese ones) someone will say, with their nose turned up (and you have to imagine this in a really snotty voice), "Oh, the base is plastic." I always reply by saying No, it's acrylic. However, they've got me wondering... Is acrylic (as in the base of a MYA acrylic) just thick-er plastic? If not, what's different about it? This is really irritating me, and I would love to know..

Acrylic glass:
Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) or poly (methyl 2-methylpropenoate) is the synthetic polymer of methyl methacrylate. This thermoplastic and transparent plastic is sold by the tradenames Plexiglas, R-Cast, Perspex, Plazcryl, Acrylite, Acrylplast, Altuglas, Polycast and Lucite and is commonly called acrylic glass or simply acrylic. The material was developed in 1928 in various laboratories and was brought to market in 1933 by Rohm and Haas Company.

it is a high end plastic. when one of your friends knock it then say "I guess you think all metals are the same? Then go get me all your silver, gold and platinum ant I will trade you sheet metal, aluminum etc."
Just like metals, plastics are by far not all the same.
