Inhaling directly under the coal is going to suck all the carbon monoxide in. Other holes allow air in to mix with.Wouldn't there be less of a taste if one was just "smoking the coals?" I think that this setup makes for less air in the base mixing with the shisha smoke, but would for no reason mean more carbon monoxide. You'll have to consider, carbon monoxide is an odorless, tasteless gas. Coal "taste" is just that, the coal. Carbon monoxide is impossible to detect without certain technologies or feeling lightheaded. When I first started hookah, I unknowingly bought unwashed tobacco and when I first felt the buzz, I thought I was sucking carbon monoxide. Ends up I wasn't. There is a fine line between the buzz from tobacco and carbon monoxide inhalation. Go ahead and use this setup but proceed with caution.
zeppyrkr
sound interesting and i really want to try but i think there is a reason for the extra air holes ...
EternalSoil
I figure it cant hurt me much more than smoking in the first place, or car emissions, or DEET in bug spray. If i start to get really lightheaded or something then ill quit =)
tingjunkie
Hah, it was me who originally tried this set-up and got a headache! (See original post here) Was the smoke retarded thick and flavorful? Yes. Do you all want to replicate it? Not so much. Really, my head was bumpin! It may have been carbon monoxide.I really didn't have ANY coal taste, but the smoke was just crazy thick. Next time I am going to punch a couple small extra holes so it won't be so bad. Good luck with this set-up, but remember... you've been warned. Edited July 5, 2007 by tingjunkie
