NERV
after much experimenting i have finally made stable oak coals, i use the holey part of a steamer to he them up on the stove, after about 10 minutes they are red hot and ready to go, then using the metal bowl cover instead of foil, and the wind cover to guard from potential flying embers, i set it up, and so far its smoking great, even better than quicklights, there seems to be a very slight taste from the coals about 99% tobacco and 1% coal taste, if this bowl stays good then i may not need to buy quicklights anymore, at $3 for a 20 pound bag of oak coal i can be set for a long time on one bag of coals, good value
mushrat
Ya, I was cooking out at my brother in laws and he had a bag og 100% wood charcaols, nice flat pieces about the right size. Was thinking about trying. Thanks for the information. Going to have to give em a go.
NERV
little update, the bowl went fine but only lasted 47 minutes, it seems oak coals burn hotter and faster than lemonwood, so for now ill be sticking with quicklights, rather have 10-15 minute total prep and a 1.5-2 hour smoke than a half hour prep and a 47 minute smoke.
