Well, this is tricky. Since specific studies on hookah have not really been completed (there are some biased ones that were not conducted properly), it's hard to tell exactly how bad for you it could be. Hookah burns at much lower temps then cigarettes or cigars (I know a TON about cigars). This being the case, in theory, the carcinogens should not be able to burn their way into your soft tissues as easily. This would definitely reduce the odds of tongue or throat cancer, but you would still have to concerned about lung cancer. Although there are herbal versions of ma'ssel available, I personally don't think that these would be any safer then tobacco other then the elimination of nicotine. Really what it comes down to is this...smoking ANYTHING is dangerous and puts you at risk for any sort of cancers. Quantity, Genetics, Temp... all sorts of things come into play with this. Anti-smoking groups have done tests in the past, but they have done them at much higher temps then hookahs typically produce. Also, it is unknown how effective the water in the base is at filtering the smoke. I personally believe in the "everything in moderation" philosophy when it comes to things like this. Eating fatty foods everyday is worse for you then a Hookah once or twice a week is IMO, and most of America does that as our obesity rates show. Just enjoy... Edited by haunt1

hmm there is nicotine absorbed while smoking shisha; however, I personally do not believe there is any real risk of physical dependence. Psychological dependence is more of a risk in my opinion.

As far as I know....dependance or addiction if you like is caused by the nicotine.....what the tar mostly does is cover your lungs (the black stuff) and beacause shisha has no tar you do not have to worry about that. What I would wonder(not worry) about is the nicotine......which is only 0.5% or what not.In comparison to a ciggaret which has like 2.25% and climing or higher (not sure of the exact values). However there is speculation (as there have not been proper tests done),that even though shisha has less nicotine you smoke it longer than a ciggaret......so i dunno.......I also believe in the everything in moderation.....but also what it boils down to is that smoking is bad in any form.....

what every one has said is true the key word is moderation, but if your that concerned about it their are some things you can do.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor nor have these substances been approved by FDA to cure or prevent any diesease.
Now thats over with I'll tell you that these have been used throught the world for centuries to combat illness.

Acai berry juice-antioxidant, I get mine from sambazon.com
Mangosteen juice-known as the queen of fruits, Mine comes from a local distributor, find one at xango.com
Shilicine- I take this daily
Researched Herbs also has a large selection of things that are taboo in the US but are used effectivley throughout the world.
Researchedherbs.com

Researching about this stuff i've also heard of hydrogen proxide thearphy (invented in the 1800s) its suppose to knock out cancer cells completely as well as just about every thing else, but I think the anti-oxidant properties of the juices should be enough. However I will say do not drink a bottle of hydrogen proxide thats not how it works. I'm still trying to find a doctor who speacializes in hydro theraphy for more incite on how it works, but I do imagine that it is probly injected into the body

Um, im not sure where you get your information.

A cigarette contains roughly 1 to 2.2 mg of nicotine. http://www.boston.com/yourlife/health/othe..._more_nicotine/
(there are many other sources available as well, but that had a good graph on the right).
Shisha, for the most part, claims .5% or .05% (some are .3).
Most of these numbers have little actual relation to the amount of nicotine in the tobacco.

However, a 10g bowl, at .5% nicotine by weight, = 5 milligrams
I never pack anything as small as 10g, usually its closer to 25 or 30, minimum.

As for tar, the 0% tar on the tub means precisely dick.
there's no tar until the tobacco is burned.
At which point the smoke you inhale is filled with burnt particulate from the tobacco, which coats your lungs.
and the longer you hold it in your lungs, the more time it has to settle.

Smoking Kills.
Period.

addiction is probably more psychological, as aldonb1 said. I smoke everyday almost, but this is because i want to. i like to just chill and smoking makes it fun/relaxing. however, if i dont smoke for a few days i dont feel like need to, my body does not crave it like a cigarette addiction, which i have had and quit. If you plan on smoking with friends a couple of times a week, i think you should be just fine. This is where i tell you its not safe at all cause smoking is bad. but i think you should be fine. lots of foods are very bad for you too, not like smoking, but it all goes into your body. if you are really concerned, ask a doctor, noting your estimated usage and all that.

Well, I have been using hookah (off and on) for over ten years. First- There is NO such thing as "safe smoking", it does not exist. I am from Kentucky (tobacco country), and I have seen several of my friends die from cigarettes. ( I personally have never smoked a cigarette in my life).

Smoking is an adult custom, and should be practiced by adults in moderation. Hookah smoking carries all of the risks and health dangers of cigarettes or any type of tobacco.

See

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/hookah/AN01265

As far as addiction, that varies widely with the individual. Some studies claim that tobacco is more addictive than cocaine. I disagree, there are so many causative factors of addiction, and individual brain chemistry and will-power vary all over the map. I had a college friend who smoked three packs a day, for ten years or more. Once he decided to quit, it took him three weeks, and he did it!

All tobacco smoke contains tar, nicotine, and other cancer causing and mutgenic substances. Although the water filters some of the "nasties" out of the smoke, the smoke in the mouthpiece is still full of danger.

Furthermore, many hookah smokers inhale more deeply than cigarette smokers, and hold the smoke in the lungs longer. This increases the volume of tar/nicotine/hydrogen cyanide, etc. that the smoker ingests.

A typical one-hour smoking session can provide the smoker with the equivalent of over 100 cigarettes.

So, I encourage you to think long and hard, about any decision to smoke (or chew) tobacco in any form. If you choose to smoke Hookah, then take it easy, use the pipe in moderation.
