jonny_lech
Anyone ever tried soaking the stem of their hookah in something like CLR? I've tried scrubbing with a wire brush, the inside, but it's hard to get all the nooks and crannies and to a certain degree I have hard time really getting everything out. So I'd like to just drop the whole apparatus into some sort of liquid that will remove all gunk and make it good as new. But what to use? Lemon juice has worked, but not completely. I've used OxyClean, but that didn't seem to get all of it either. Cheap vodka actually seemed to work the best, but that's not entirely practical.... aldonb1
try beer... it works wonders on the smell. and for cleaning the stem i use a heavy duty test tube scrubber that I stole from NIH (i do some research stuff there)

It's SUPER hard to get both the whire residue as well as the horrid taste from it out completely. It's not worth the time imo.

ezie
I use lemon juice with baking soda seems to work well. For the bad taste and smell on my washable i just raise it with water and hang it to dry. Besure not to wash your hose if it's not a washable or else it will start to rust the hose. Peace
hookaheveryday
I used it to clean my hookah and it did a great job. CLR is also excellent for cleaning hoses that are beginning to rust. Make sure they are well rinsed, however. The CLR smell will go away after the first smoke.
Sonthert
Can you drink it; that's the question. If you can't drink it, inhaling it would be detrimental. Your body has less defenses through your lungs than it does through your mouth/throat/stomach.

boomhauer
i wouldnt drink it and would be a little weary of using it. the ingredients in CLR are as followsIngredient Name *WATER (68-74%)Percent 74Ingredient Name GLYCOLIC ACID (13-16%) ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glycolic_acid )Percent 16Ingredient Name *SULFAMIC ACID (3-6%) ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sulfamic_acid )Percent 6Ingredient Name *DISODIUM CAPRYLOAMPHODIPROPIONATE (4-7%) (not on wiki)Percent 7Ingredient Name ETHANOL, 2-BUTOXY- (1-4%) (two sites. http://www.wrppn.org/janitorial/tools/butoxy.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethanol )Percent 4Ingredient Name 1,2,3-PROPANETRICARBOXYLIC ACID, 2-HYDROXY- (1-4%) ( http://encyclopedia.farlex.com/2-hydroxy-1...carboxylic+acid [citric acid] ) Percent 4 Edited July 12, 2007 by boomhauer

cafesaden
rubbing alcohol and table saltits the same cleaning solution you can buy at head shops simplified.fill the stem half way up with rubbing alcohol with one end covered.i have a cooking-type funnel and pour salt into the stem using that. then shake vigorously for 45 seconds - 1 minute..tell me what you think.. also use this on your glass vases to get rid of the foggy residue on the glass. nicayotte
Here is what i did, which may be "ghetto" to some of you.... Get a brush that fits your stem and hook it up to a drill, let that baby spin in there it works soo good with lemon juice or CLR
jaker29902
yeah dont use CLR, and try to avoid rubbing alchohol, just use some lemon juice to scrub with, let it some in some baking soda/water mixture, then rinse out with some clean water. What I do is rinse and lightly scrub after every smoke, and then let it soak in a lemon juice/water mixture when it really needs it. Works fine for me, but yeah if its bad follow the above instructions, and if you really need to, mix a water/salt solution fill the stem with it and shake vigorously and then rinse it out. jonny_lech
Maybe I'll stick with cheap vodka. Also gives me something to give to unpleasant guests.

Sonthert
A couple of those are kinda nasty (2 butoxy-ethanol is different than ethanol). One is a glycol, like anti-freeze, the other is booze.Glycolic and sulfamic acids aren't too bad, but, lemon juice might be the trick, or vinegar or beer. cafesaden
why should you stay away from rubbing alcohol? i have been using it forever it works better then lemon juice by farrrr
jaker29902
eh, alcohol is okay to imbibe, but prolly not so good for the lungs imho. EDIT: I say this because I believe regular alcohol is ethanol alcohol, and rubbing alcohol is slightly different, which makes all the difference in the world when considering you will probably be inhaling it to some degree Edited July 14, 2007 by jaker29902
cafesaden
yeah i can see what your saying, but i think proper sufficient drying time would eliminate that. i also rinse it out with hot water 10-15 times and let it dry completely.
