stryet
I'm not totally sure, but I think the ball bearing is to keep the hookah airtight when smoking from only one hose. My friend has a double hose egyptian from hookah-shisha, and to make it work we just cover the other hose with a finger while the other is smoking to keep it airtight. It smokes perfectly fine like this.
Allia22
Get creative. Airsoft pellets, BBs, spare balls from body jewelry, or if all else fails, cellophane with a rubber band.

It was a green balloon, if anyone cares. You do not "need" this but if you dont have it you need to cover the hole. this is so you can blow the stale smoke out if you leave the hookah alone for a few minutes, but keeps air from gettign in and diluting your smoke. Zuter
My original hookah was a three hose auto seal setup, and eventually I removed all the ball bearings because I felt they prevented a smooth smoke and on some of the hoses they would get very hard to maintain unless cleaned immeadiately after each user.I just made corks for the spiggots I'm not using anymore and I make all my friends toughen up. Sonthert
Or...a tightly rolled up ball of foil.
jelatin
They aren't totally necessary, but I -love- auto seals, almost all my hookahs have them. Id say ghetto-rig it with one of the aforementioned methods for now, and pick up some replacements on your next H-S order, they are only 50 cents.
