aluminum oxide = toxic?

Recommended Posts

this isn't too worry anyone, this was just a curiosity thing in case anyone out there knows...I PMs lord dorian, our forum's resident science guy :), but have yet to hear back...
I know most of us here wear deodorant and if you didn't know, deodorant has a TON of aluminum in it that is absorbed by our body everyday so I am not that worried about smoking with it, as has been discussed on here before, ppl cook with it all the time.  However, I heard that specifically when burned like hookahs do with coal, the foil releases the chemical aluminum oxide which IS extremely toxic...Just wondering if anyone else has heard of this and knows anything.
Thanks.

The aluminum issue is one reason i switched to a metal screen. I'd also noticed what could be some sort of coating in the rynolds wrap when i hit it with my torch. (i use the same type as Math. different brand. Can't beat the ease and portability. And it WILL get your natural coals going fast).
If I was you, Id use the screen and learn to manipulate my heat with my coals and not hole variation on my foil. I say this because its what *I* do and for no other reason.
Good to know im nothjing if not predictable.

Okay, this is a GREAT topic to use the search engine on. Good ol Kofod addressed this issue once. I am not an atom-splitter like he is and I can't put it quite like he can but here is what I remember from past posts on this topic:
1. We really don't know if it will do anything to you.
2. If it is capable of doing anything to you, it is because you get it way, way too hot and it starts to melt.
3. Yes, it believed that some of our foil may have a coating on it that may be bad, and it's also believed that if you want to continue using foil, then invest in the pre-cut packages you can get from the hookah stores that are (suposedly) made just for the smoking machine.
4. If it does have a negative effect on you, you probably won't realize it until they're singing "The Old Rugged Cross" over your dirt mound. This is because aluminum oxide poisoning may cause (unsubstantiated) Alzheimer's (dementia) and from what I remember from those who have it, they really don't care about too much. So, you may be kinda happy. We really don't know.
5. Is it possible to aquire rolls of foil that does not have this so-called mystery coating on it? You betcha! Where do you find these rolls? Beats me. Good luck in your quest, and when you do find the Holy Grail, shoot us the location.
Cheers Y'all

This just reminded me of a shirt on T-shirthell.com. The shirt said:
I may have alzheimers, but at least I don't have alzheimers.
I'm sorry, i know this is horrible but I tinkled myself reading it.

Yes, there are a lot of older threads now gone. I wish my Ouzo project was still there too. Or the one where ZooJohnnyZETA and I were doing quick rundowns of flavors. Now, that was a riot! Oh well.
And to you, Yashman, I'm as sick as they get. Can I lick your eyeball? See?

[quote name='wyteboy']I know most of us here wear deodorant and if you didn't know,

everyday so I am not that worried about smoking with it, as has been
discussed on here before, ppl cook with it all the time.  However,

Well the big issue here is to distinct between aluminum and aluminum oxide.

Pure metallic aluminium absorbed in the human body is proven to lead to Alzheimers.

Therefore Aluminum oxide does not present the same hazard since AlO2 is
a more stable compound than Al, and therefore having AlO2 in contact
with your body to react into Al is unlikely.
But AlO2 in anti perspirant roll-ons (not deodorants) is regulated - at
the same time replacements for the AlO2's ability to "break down" sweat
are used more and more. (Often with another metal that is further back
in my mind for me to remember it now).
So the thing is - You do use an Al compound - you just dont get any pure Al absorbed in your body (in big amounts that is).

Its the same story with Al cans - here we have pure Al, but for the
stable Al to release Al in your body is just unlikely. Even if you took
a bite of the can to swallow no paticular amount of Al would be
absorbed in your body tissue (the risk of scredding your self through
is offcourse stille there )

So when we get alerted with Al for hookah use is the high temperatures that we use.
We are working close to Al melting temp and in earlier post people
reported "pops" from the foil that where often followed by melting,
fuming and so on.
The suspicion that follows is that this set up could break the "Al will never absorb in you" barrier.

Besides all that, I myself have better results with the screen and in the end its easier.
