Brownman18
so i just read online, and it says i should only fill so the bottom part of the steel poll is 1 inch deep in water, does that mean that my base isnt supposed to be three quarters full ? How deep do you guys fill ?
staygone
If you have the bottom portion of the stem 1-1.5 inches deep in the water, you'll be good to go.-QM
SafeSearchOff
it all depends how deep the steel pole reaches into your stem.Hypothetical situation:You have a 10" tall baseThe shaft is 8" longFill the base 3" high, thus submerging the shaft 1"personally I like to go for 1 1/2"the harder pull feels better methinksedited for spelling Edited July 17, 2007 by SafeSearchOff
KillZedKill
Usually an inch or so above the stem is perfect.

mrmonk7663
In addition to changing the draw of the pipe, it will add additional volume for smoke to collect, thus more than likely allowing larger and thicker clouds.Mike

Amazing cant wait to get home!
Sonthert
I think it depends on a few variables.Various manufacturers have different lengths of downstems. If you put water an inch over the bottom of most Syrian pipes, your hose will be flooded. I used to think the opposite, that the more water, the thicker the hits. The smoke is resigned to a smaller space, so the density must be higher...I think it doesn't matter, now. The smoke fills up the chamber, true. When you suck through the hose, you create an area of lower pressure, smoke from the stem, driven by atmospheric pressure, rushes through the water to equilibrate the pressure. The amount of smoke above the water doesn't affect the total amount of smoke...unless you remove the head/charcoal from the hookah between hits...it only serves as a storage tank for smoke. Assuming you only ate food from your refrigerator, you don't assume the size of the refrigerator has any bearing on how much food you eat. What really matters is how many times you go shopping for groceries a week and how many groceries you buy in each trip. Your actual draw is a flow. On the flip side, If you have a good enough hose that smoke "leaks" out of the end from atmospheric pressure, you have more smoke to lose to the air. If water does have filtration properties, more water means more filtration. If your smoke gets harsh, you adjust the charcoal, that harsh smoke in the chamber you have to blow out is going to be wasted...the more in the storage tank, the more is going to be wasted. The most important test for water level is to add water to the hookah, and without the hose attached, suck hard through the hose port. If you get water in your mouth, you have too much water. Some people might like a lighter draw, so just cover the bottom of the shank to a 1/4" of water. Some people like a heavier draw, so fill water just to the point before you get water in your mouth. (Or remove it until you can just not get water in it). Or somewhere in between. garykainz
i usually only put it about a half inch above the bottom of the stem. when my friend filled it a few times he did more, and i felt harder bubbles all the way thru the hose, i don't really like that so i do less
Sonthert
When you glug up into the hose, that ruins normal hoses. The wires start to rust inside.
