ahzwald
when i first got my hookah, i of course didnt read anything, and just filled the base right up....real hard to pull, then i found that the stem should be about an inch or so under the water, nice and sweet now. its like trial and error, dont be afraid to mess up cause if you never mess up you wont learn nothing. SafeSearchOff
Personally I liek a harder pull, It always seemed to me that you get more smoke with ah arder pull, and with lesser pull your hookah doesnt make very lound noises, its really disturbing, I cant live with it. symptom CY
Hard pull can mean a lot of things:-too much water-too few holes in the foil-the holes in the foil are obstructed by the coals-the tobacco is obstructing the holes in the bowl (funnel bowls are good for eliminating this problem)-narrow stem-narrow hose port-narrow hose (endpiece, length, and/or mouthpiece)Look to improve all of these for an easier pull. In response to what SafeSearch said: an easier pull should never really mean that you get less smoke. I prefer a pretty easy pull just because I think it's much more comfortable. If your lungs really have to work to pull the smoke, it can lead to a sort of heavy feeling in the chest after a while. It just seems more luxurious when you don't have to suck so hard... Sonthert
Or a defective hose or a hose with some foreign material stuck in it (Especially the stem piece).
symptom CY
My friend bought his first hookah from Social Smoke, and when he got it he called me up and said the draw was really tight. I gave him the usual advice about the water and the tobacco in the bowl and all that, but he kept calling back saying it wasn't getting any better. So finally he brings the hookah over and when I try to pull on this thing I busted up laughing -- it wasn't just a tight draw... this was like sucking on a tightly plugged hose. I took it apart and found that I couldn't see through one end of the stem and out the other -- I shined a light inside and saw what looked to be a clump of metal a few inches from the bottom, completely sealing the inside of the stem. We were eventually able to smash it through with a thin metal bar, though he probably should have just sent it back.
clickhea
the stem in my mya isnt 100% clear either, when i look in it it looks like alot of jagged edges, i was thinkin bout takin a small drill bit to it, but i dont know if it'll cause it to rust so i left it alone

It's disconcerting to hear you want to take a drill to a brand new MYA you just bought. I thought MYA's were expensive in the first place becasue they were quality maschined? I might add that a bad pull can also be caused my a bad seal/air leak. Set your hookah up completely except leave the bowl empty. Firmly place the palm of your hand over the bowl and then take a draw from your hose. If it's sealed up air tight then you will barely be able to get any air at all. If you get air, find the leak and fix it. Plumbers tape can help. After all of these steps are done you'll be set.Head
Sonthert
When I refer to the stem, I am referring to the non-business end of the hose, the end that fits into the hookah hose port. I use electrical tape for tightening, on a regular basis, the tape will slip and partially block the venturis. Another one is that sometimes, an exceptionally thin hose stem (or one that tapers down real thin) will, when inserted into the hose port, seem fine, but draw poorly. Sometimes the way long (especially Egyptian) hose ports bend, a thin hose will seat itself in and block the hole partially, hitting the wall of the hose port, rather than the open area.
