HooKendo
Well, I decided that I'd start a tip section with hookah advice to new smokers as well as the more experienced (hey, there's always room to learn a little trick or two...). Every once in a while, when I have the time, I will add another little tip or piece of advice that I have discovered over my duration of smoking, learning, and experiencing hookah. I have no credits/qualifications to offer except for this: I have consistently had exceptional smoking experiences from my hookah for the last 6 months with rare exceptions of mediocrity few and far between. Also, in my group of friends I am known as "Dr. Hookah" because of the amount of time I've spent researching and experimenting. I get calls every other day from friends and acquaitances who ask me for advice/help with hookah related problems. So, in conclusion, I think I must be doing something right. Anywhoo, I'll start you off with 2 VITAL tips and one strange piece of advice. 1) NEVER EVER smoke a hookah with a wet/moist stem or hose!!! This is one that I know will come as a surprise to most. Seriously, this will ruin your hose very quickly (even a washable). Think of it this way; the particles in the smoke are especially prone to stick to water as opposed to dry material (duh...). You will get a build up of grime and filth this way in only 1-2 smokes. If you want to significantly cut down the cleaning on your stem and the rate at which you replace hoses, FOLLOW THIS ADVICE! This is absolutely my #1 tip. Water washing should never be done before a smoke. 2) Many smokers will tell you to loosley sprinkle tobacco in the bowl and not to touch it at all, but I have found that the best smoke comes if you lightly tamp the tobacco with your fingers, so that it forms a loose "cake". This prevents random pieces of tobacco frying on the foil, and also helps to give a slightly tighter pull. Also, make sure to tamp the tobacco in a slight bowl shape, with a noticeable dip in the center. The coal pushes the foil down in the center, so this counteracts for an even smolder. 3) Next time you smoke caramel, try pouring a little bit of chocolate syrup on top. It's damn tasty! wyteboy
hookendo I actually also do like #2 and tap it down into a loose cake sort of thing...get great smokes as well.

HooKendo
4) Another flavor tip: Next time you smoke a Double Apple/Eskandrany Apple flavored ma'asall, sprinkle a few dashes of cinnamon on top. More tastiness
nidal105
Hi HooKendo, Thx for the tips, nice idea- i just wanted to know if by cinnamon you were referring to powder, sauce, cinnamon Ma'asel? Thx again nidal105
HooKendo
I meant powdered cinnamon for tip #4 5) To get a good, rounded taste of any tobacoo that you smoke (expecially full bodied sweet flavors like caramel and cappuccino), put the tip of your tongue right up close to the tip of the hose as you pull in. You may be surprised...
HooKendo
6) For an amazingly clean and fresh tasting hookah, swish the original, unflavored kind of Listerine (Yellowish colored) through the stem and base with a little bit of salt for abrasiveness. Rinse well, and your hookah is gauranteed to taste like new! (Cleaning brushes also help to remove build-up...)
John Deere
A family friend of mine who is a marine and just got back from the middle east, was here a few days ago and he told me that they have coals that actually have spices in them, like cinnamon, and cardamom and stuff like that. The cinnamon thing reminded me of it.
Seandoo
Man that doesn't seem right, having flavored coals. I mean it's a cool idea and everything...maybe helps get rid of any charcoal taste you may or may not experience with your coal...but you shouldn't be tasting the coal if you have a decent setup, right? Too many added strange burning chemicals I'd think.
John Deere
I think they are just natural coals with peices of spices in them.
HooKendo
7) Try putting a few small glow sticks (the ones that you can put in your mouth) in the base of your hookah when you smoke. There's nothing cooler than a radioactive hookah.
maxima302
Currently i'm smoking AF Coconut. I want to put milk in the base, but I am using a medium size hookah and the milk bubbles go into the hose, even though the base isn't filled up too high. So how do you fix this? Thanks

Thanks
Don't use milk? I know it might sound like it would go good with some flavors, but I don't think you can do it without the milk bubbles. And no sense in ruining your hose just to try. All I can suggest is to use other liquids instead of milk. Maybe you can find something creamy that won't bubble, but I can't think of anything. Sorry. alen
milk use to only mess up your hookah -but if you want that creamy flav i can recommend the milk and banana flavour or the banana split it has a little of that milky taste
Seandoo
Hmm spiced coals might taste good now that I think about it. About that whole milk thing - I thought about trying it more than a few times myself but never got the guts to try it since I can only imagine what it would smell like in the base after...maybe lots of ice would help it from getting rancid. As far as the bubbles go, instead of using your hookah as a test lab, just get a cup and straw to blow through...try powdered milk mixed with water, try dairy creamer, maybe nonfat milk? Just experiment until you find something that doesn't bubble much (and let me know what your results are ) before testing it in your hookah. Seandoo
Also maybe mixing part milk with part water might help alleviate the bubbles?
HooKendo
In honor of the milk discussion that has formed... 8) Try mixing a 1:3 part mixture of coconut milk to water. No bubbles, but gives you a nice, creamy smoke
Stew
9) When using cola in the vase, make sure it's completely lost its fizz. Water alone will ruin a hose, I'd hate to know what a carbonated beverage would do.
maxima302
hum... thanks guys. I know I've been to a Hookah bar that offers milk as an option.
MR Bubble
Careful with the cola. Some people just don't realize how acidic that stuff can be. We used to buy a can of coke and pur it in cups to clean some of our parts when we were out of solvent in the hangar. Worked almost as good as solvent. Then look at me: trying coffee in the base. We used to do the same with coffee! Just disregard this transmission. "Help me! Help me!
