I Have An Al Waha Question...

Recommended Posts

I can't seem to get my Al Waha to burn quite right. I'm using a medium phunnel w/ scalli mod. Using foil with the standard phunnel hole arrangement (two concentric circles near the outside of the bowl.) Smoking from a 32" egyptian with my new Nammor. If I use two coals (3 Kings, btw), I barely get enough smoke. If I use 3 coals I get enough smoke, but I burn the shisha in the process. I have a feeling that I should try my Pyrex glass bowl the next time I smoke. Anybody have some suggestions for me or know if I'm doing something wrong?

be careful not to over pack it... i would much rather under pack it and get a lot of smoke and have a smaller session than ruin the tobacco... how well is it pulling... you might not have enough airflow smile.gif just some things to think about... i had a little trouble with al waha now i got it smoking like a champ rolleyes.gif

I use a standard bowl for al waha. Never have a problem with smoke or flavour. I don't pack hard at all and use one and a half quicklights to get it going. Just keep trying.

Similar to Tangiers, try putting more in the bowl.

Should I give it a shot w/o the scalli mod or would that just be stupid?

Aside from the Phunnel, I also have a Super Cheif and a Pyrex glass bowl from Sahara Smoke. I'd show you by posting the link, but for some reason I am forbidden from doing so. Mine is the "Striped Globe Pyrex Hookah Bowl"

I am planning on giving the AW a shot in the Pyrex my next go-around.

I've had my best results with AW with three or four Japanese coals ( a lot, right? ) and a metal screen instead of foil. Al Waha, especially the After Nine flavor, seems to deal well with a -lot- of heat. But, the problem is that foil distributes that heat very rapidly. It's sort of like a thin-guage aluminum pot. It absorbs heat, gets hot very quickly, and cools off very quickly. For another example, bake something in the oven in tin foil. Even at half an hour to an hour, you can reach in and grab the foil bare-handed and proceed to unwrap it. On the other hand, trying doing the same trick with a thicker-guaged stainless steel pot left on the stove for 30-60 minutes. The metal screen will do a much better job of storing and evenly releasing heat. I don't have any proof to back this up, but I also think the Japanese coals do a much better job of burning hot and even than quicklites.

Bottom line. High heat, thick metal screen, and AW has smoked perfect for me every time.
Just make sure you keep a close eye on your coal placement every now and then.

-Edit-

Forgot to mention, I've been using a standard Mya ceramic bowl. Edited by The fabulous Ian

I've actually never tried smoking al waha out of my phunnel, i've been to occupied with tangiers and layalina. Wheneveri smoke Al Waha its out of my standard mya bowl, on my QT. ill use 2 small 3K's or Starlights, and take off one of the coals for about 10 - 15 minutes about 25 minutes in for better heat, and it works great. great smoke, full flavor. awesomeness.

Al waha takes two things:
A lot of shisha in the bowl and
A lot of coal on the foil.

Its hard to burn it, and youll taste it coming (so act fast!)

when i smoke al waha after nine out of my medium phunnel with scalli mod, i break up 2 33mm 3 king coals into halves, i then put 3 halves on the bowl to get it started, after those coals die down i only use 2 halves (1 coal) and put the halevs across from each other
