what am i doing right/wrong?

Recommended Posts

ok... a majority of you guys say sprinkle the maassell about half way or 3/4 of the way to the top of the bowl.  I dont do it that way... I fill it like a little bit over the top....  its insane!!! because i just read that if the bowl is over packed it would burn super quick... but my maassell never got harsh since ive done that.... just once because i was learning how to regulate the heat... I find that so crazy because if its over packed all the way to the top... then my technique is overflowing the bowl.... i dont ever pack the massell in with pressure tho... the only reason it gets flat is because when i apply the foil it flattens out real nicely... If you guys wanna try it out i suggest you do... I found out that the flavor was intensified by like 2 folds... I love it... any questions? reply to the post... bye!

So I guess you're not doing anything right or wrong huh?
Although not completely the same way, I too pack a bowl with more ma'assel than most people on this board. I don't over-flow the tobacco as you say, but I do get it pretty darn close to the top. I understand that people like to leave a gap between the tobacco and the foil so the coals arn't as close, so it doesn't burn, but I've honestly never had a problem. It must just be the way I pack it/hole arrangments. To me, it would seem like the hookah would take a lot of work/time to get going if their was a large gap between tobacco and foil, but everyone has their own methods.

hey there
I once went to a shisha cafe and they had packed the bowl over the top
of the rim to the extent that the foil was curved up, and had used
pretty big holes. I don't know how, but it was one of the best hookahs
i have ever had, with a thick rich smoke and it lasted two hours
without going harsh - - i never tried it myself at home coz i always
assumed the tobacco would burn but i guess it worked really well that
time at the cafe.

Hey Guys
I can't actually remember the hole arrangement but there weren't a huge
amount of holes, prob between 8 and 12... and the coal was the same one
i use at home (its an Australian brand Al-alali), yeah i can't really
understand how they were able to get it so well done. If i tried it at
home i would probably burn the crap out of it It was a one-off hookah i guess

When i was in egypt and lebanon they pack it to teh top as well, it all depends on the quality of teh tobacco and how you regulate your heat. I have always packed it to teh top and i get a nice steady 2 hour blaze out of it. Then again thats me...do what feels best for you.

well this is how I do it... I sprinkle the maassell all the way to the top first, so its flush with the bowl... then I get another pinch of it with my thumb, fore, and middle finger and sprinkle that around... after I get a piece a foil... I wrap and make sure its on tight and straight on top off the bowl... I get a toothpick and I put ummm... 8 holes around the edges... 8 holes around the middle of the bowls radius... and then 1 hole dead center.... then I get the bowl and I give it little bangs on the table... I don't know why I do that... but my friend told me too I bang it on the rims and turn around as to bang all sides... then I put my hand over the foil and blow really hard... and remove my hand... (while still blowing) then I do that once again... by this time.. the foil would have been a little bit curved up due to the blowing... then I just go ahead and put it on the hookah and put 2 coals on it... I used diamante finger coals... (they crack in half to make half of a circle, it doesn't roll off that way). I put my ear close to the bowl to check if its cooking (the sizzling noise). then after a minute or 2... on my first drag on the hose... it comes out flavourful and thick white... like your exhaling a pearl... hope that helps guys... if you don't under stand something just post it up and maybe I can take a picture and show you... have fun guys I hope this method works well for you like it does me... take care...

lokixg, please take a picture of this. Its interesting to me as I havent been able to have consecutive good hookah sessions anymore. When I first started, I dont know what i was doing right but i was having good sessions. Lately I cant keep is consecutive. I think its because im using a differnet hookah and havent gotten used to a good arrangement. For anyone using a junior sultan hookah with the large bowl(using al fakher tobacco and a charcoal similar to nour) can anyone please post their methods/arrangements for good hookah sessions. Thank you!

If you try adding a thin layer of honey at the top of your bowl, it will lessen the harshness and give you some leway before it starts to burn the tobacco.

Does everyone usually do a mutliple of tiny holes, or a dozen of bigger holes?

i used to do something and these days i cant believe it didnt burn the tobacco, what i did was fill the bowl just shy of the rim, then i would actually press the foil down into it, so when i was smoking both the coals and the tobacco wer einside the bowl with the foil seperating them, then one day all of a sudden it started burning alot, i wondered why, went online to find out, and found these forums

Did yours ever go bad, or did you just switch to the usual method? I wish I could still get that technique to work, it was very convenient cuz at the end of a session the tobacco patty would come out with the foil.
