Smoking Waterpipes In Uk Park Legal Or Illegal?

Recommended Posts

Ok, it started today. Me and my friends went to smoke shisha in the park. Since the smoking ban came in to place all the shisha cafes are closed down and are forced to provide shisha outside. There isnt many so we decided to use my friends shisha. I am pretty sure that parks arnt included in the smoking ban.

Anyway at the park we were lighting our shisha up on the bench. A lady approached us and said were not aloud to smoke it. She then pulled out a camera and took pictures of us. We told her its tobacco and theres nothing wrong with it. She gave us an answer saying u might light the whole park in flames. Completely ridiculous. Anyway some other asian old man came along and he knew what it was but he wasn't sure. So he considered it wrong. She also knew that it was a waterpipe.

We just took the shisha and smoked it inside near some trees which blocked the views after the told us to move. Thing is she said she would call the police. She started saying things about drugs and stuff and I dont want her taking pictures. We just could'nt be bothered to waste our time so we just took the shisha away..

What makes me angry is the fact that is this illegal or not?

If its legal can someone give me a link to a official website so I print out a sheet incase a person approaches us again. In the little area sorrounded by bushes people did walk past and see us but never said a word (they probably thought were up to no good, when the truth is were smoking nakhla tobacco.. whats wrong with that). It was only coz of that bitch dat stopped us. I've seen people smoke shisha in the park many times but that was before the ban. Before we lit it I had to go and buy some foil and that was about 20 mins no one stopped us, even some kids came up and asked us about the shisha. Edited by amnite

Dear Lord.

Yes your right. It's techincally not illegal (unless posted that smoking is prohibited, IE:Botanical gardens or areas of outstanding beauti ect) But even then it's tough to enforce.

However you need to ask yourself whether this is such a clever idea. You might as well put a neon sign above your head and say look at us what terrible rebels we are.

Hookah is not mainstream in the uk by any stretch. And we are probably 10 years behind the US in terms of acceptance of this.

Take a walk down Edgeware road where they are smoking on the street (Do they still?) and look at people's reactions. I love doing this from my office on the Edgeware road. You can see the disdain dripping from the uneducated.

I would rather see organised events in parks that would allow people to bring hookah's and enjoy. Where proper information can be disseminated to the uneducated.

2/3 guys sitting in a park with a hookah are not going to convince anyone of anything.

Just my 2p's worth.

so they finally banned smoking ey? I was in London for the first time on vacation and coudlnt help but to notice all the signs about the ban in July.

I went to some Marocon food/shisha lounge on Queensway. It was decent, nicely decorated inside. Edited by racemyghost

yep, i felt like punchin her face but the police would have a reason to take us down lol but anyway yeh ill do it in a corner next time about 5/6 people... anyway if someone does call the police we'll just blank the people who call them and continue puffing away they cant do shit.. Im going to ask one of the community police officers if its ok, if it is then its ok.

You know is it our fault that they closed down all the cafes we have no were to smoke it, plus whats the point doing at your house, its a nice sunny day in the park and you can go to shade under the tree and light it up. I say a lot of people do know its shisha but many still dont especially white people because it only really started gaining popularity 10 years ago. Edited by amnite

I can't see how you can make this claim.

I often used to go into the shisha lounge opposite the queens way station (central line) and
it took ages for anyone to speak to me. And when they did it was 'wow - we have never seen a western guy in here'

The only people who are going to know what it is, is those of a middle eastern culture. You can only expect the dopey suited bar stewards to think it's a device for nortiness.

que ensuing grief.

I just think with a little oragnaisation you could make it more accesible. 3 guys with a hookah looks so wrong and unapproachable.

23 guys with hookahs in a manner that encourages participation would be much better?
