chinamon
the first box of 3kings that ive ever bought and used seems to light funny. i didnt realize this until i received another roll from a local store as a gift when i bought a box of nakhla from them. the free roll glows red immediately after that spot is done sparking so the whole coal is already glowing when the sparking is done. however, the box that i have will only have small patches glowing red when the whole coal is done sparking. i have to wait about a minute after its done sparking (while blowing on the coal) before the whole coal is red.did i get a bad batch? has anyone else experienced this? quakerotis
yeah, my 3 kings have to sit for a minute before the whole thing is red. I'll usually hold it over a lighter after its done sparking to get the whole bottom red hot. Edited July 31, 2007 by quakerotis
yashman19
Same. My 3Kings, after being done sparking, will have patches of glowing red. I just either point a fan at them for a few minutes or blow on them a bit, and after a minute or two, tehy're ready to go.
chinamon
so i guess the roll i got that is glowing red and ready to use immediately after sparking is the odd one?lol. i never would've thought that.
SafeSearchOff
chinamon, i've experienced the same situations as you. for some reason theyre just like that, i've gotten rolls that will make the coals red hot right after the sparkling, and ive (more frequently) gotten rolls that only have some spots that are red hot. ioannisds
I too have run into the same situation, with the patchy spots of red as you all describe being the norm. I have also found that the 33mm Three Kings light more evenly than the bigger 40mm ones.
Sonthert
The older the roll, the more patchy the lighting will be is my guess.
lilbrownindian
my box of 3 kings had 2 rolls that lit really fast and the rest did patches
Ocrap
I noticed that golden quicklites are more likely to be patchy. When I use to use 3k, it would be red not instantly, but pretty quick.
MR Bubble
Here in the mucky south, I have the same problem. I'm sure it has everything to do with humidity. One way to tell is by how easy they are to break in half. Well, I usually break mine into 2 or 4 pieces, depending on the bowl I'm using, but a healthy, dry 3 kings takes a fair amount of pressure to snap, while a moist (from humidity) will break with almost no force, and light very slowly and unevenly. What to do? If you live in a damp location, especially when it rains, make sure you always re wrap your coals and keep them covered in a dry place after you open them. Once you do this, your coals will normally be okay.MR Bubble
Sonthert
Yeah, the moisture apparently have some deleterious effects. George, at Hookah Company, has made several comments that 3 Kings that has been exposed to damp tend to light more poorly. I believe it.
Ocrap
Can Nours ever be damaged like this? Charcoal never gets old right?

MR Bubble
I really don't think natural wood coal (lump) will go bad from moisture. It would just need drying out really good.As for the 3 kings, I can see if they become permanently damaged. Some places offer a coal named "3 Queens." These seem to be produced by the same folks as 3 kings, in the same box and all, but their presense on the market isn't consitant. I have a feeling they're 3 kings that have been moisture damaged, since they're a little cheaper that 3 kings, and act the same as damaged kings, with crumbling, poor lighting, etc... However, once lit, they seem to smoke fine for me.MR Bubble
Sonthert
Probably the same coal, manufactured in the same place...its common for Japanese coals.
