tsm29
Just got my small Phunnel from MNHookah, wondering what kind of coals you guys use with them. Using a 3Kings seems pointless as the majority of the coal would be on the mod. I use Stargate fingers but I'm wondering how would I position them on the bowl itself? Two chunks, one on each side? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.Zyphus Edited July 31, 2007 by tsm29
chinamon
you could probably still use 3kings.. just break one in half and put one half at the 12o'clock position and the other half at 6o'clock (directly across from each other).
Ocrap
I love Nours coal. I use them all the time with my small phunnel.
Shifty
Oh My, so many configurations. Jap EZ lights - 3 in a pyramid shape, 4 in a square around the edgesQuicklights (3k, golden) - 2 pieces, broken in half each placed in a square around the funnel, or 3 pieces in a triangleFingers- 2, 1" pieces on the sides constantly rotating around the bowlNatural chunks - Normally I just find 1 big piece that covers the whole damn thing.Coconut coal - they are angled, just set 2 of them in the same configuration as the fingers. All in all, just rotate the coals every 10-15 minutes to get a nice even heat and burn, and you should have a nice spent doughnut of shisha at the end. mushrat
i use finger coals on my phunnel. I put 2-3 small pieces on the edges. I only use it with Tangiers mind you so the heat requirement is much lower than with any other shisha.

Hearsay
Just to second Chinamon's post, one 40mm quicklite broken in half placed on either side of the bowl should do it.

tsm29
What would be the difference? Once you break a half off of a 3Kings wouldn't it be the same as a peice of a finger coal?
racemyghost
I used to use Nour finger coals but i switched over to Canary Golden Coals (japanese easlights) because i have discovered that managing heat with the jap coals are a lot easier then finger coals. I use finger coals for regular bowls. My configuration of the jap coals are 4 pieces, 1 piece placed on each edge forming a square (keep in mind, i have a medium phunnel bowl). When i used to use finger coals on the phunnel, i would use 2 - 3 pieces.

SafeSearchOff
i prefer to use 1 Nour finger coal, broken into 3 pieces. be carful since theyre round though, kind of push them down onto the foil to make a little indent for it to rest in.

tsm29
Yeah, I already have a box of the knock-offs, I'm getting another phunnel from HC so I'll put a box or two of those on the order.
stryet
I've been using Japanese Canarys and Rollands quartered and in the cross formation. It smokes great, and I never really have to move the coals, but I kinda want something that's cheaper and lasts longer. I've been thinking of going back to Al Adjad finger coals, but have had problems with heat before. Anyone know if japs or fingers are better for phunnels? mrmonk7663
Japanese Golden canary all the way. I use the NON easy light. Best flavor ever!!!Salam, michael
spoolinspoon
Stargate finger coals for me. 2-3 one inch logs do the trick for me. I put them at an angle so the coal is touching the edge of the bowl. I found that it heats the bowl completely rather then burning the top layer of tobacco and then having the bowl up to speed with heat.

"Canary Golden Coals"WHY?There is nothing wrong with the chinese coals (Available normally in a black box).I use them all the time and they work fine. So do others.I fear there is some coal snobbery in the works. They have no taste, no smell, and light just fine (I have used both).Unless you want to increase you coals costs by 100% of course. The 'easy lights' are just fine.JD
SafeSearchOff
Yeah, the chinese knockoffs of jap coals really arent bad, I'm pretty sure people actually favor the knockoffs over the real ones. I think quality doesnt really change with the square jap/chinese quicklites.
Scoop
knockoffs have more sulphur. i use knockoffs.i get them for 3.49 a box, while the japanese ive seen no cheaper than 14 a box. 4 knock offs for the price of 1 real? meh, ill stick with knockoffs. racemyghost
Ive tasted the coals in my shisha with the knock-offs at times....I can pick up a whole box of the canary coals for $10 from a local middle eastern market. The knock-offs usually run about $6-7 ( and dont tell me they are cheaper online, did you forget about shipping?). So why not (in my case) fork up the extra couple bucks and get the real stuff...
