Yea. I had the impression that tombeic (sp) was long and stringy. You wash it, pack the bowl to over fill it and just lay the coal on top. Has any one else have any experience with smoking this way? For some reason I though MR Bubble has tried it before.

and from what I read, You were right cypress, the coal is placed right on top of the "tömbeki"
"tömbeki is the dark, strong high-nicotine tobacco grown near Konya and Antakya for use in Nargiles"

hi
All the oldies in Lebanon and the middle east smoke "tombek", its more
common among the older generation of smokers (50+) and its not really
that popular anymore meaning that you will prob have trouble finding
the appropriate bowl on the internet. All i remember from my aunty's
hookah (all she smokes is tombek) is that the top part was really flat,
and shallow, so you had plenty of width but not really any depth. This
is obviously so you could stack up as much as possible and just place
the coal directly on top. One thing i do remember is the smell - boy
does that tobacco stink up the house
Never tasted it but the smell is really strong, and if smoked
persistently over time everything in the house will absorb the smell -
no soft, pleasant apple aroma. It was
not long and stringy like some of the loose tobacco you buy for
cigarrettes, it is more like really big flaky, dry pieces stacked on
top of eachother in block-form. i have seen two types, Istanbuli and
Isfahani (One from Turkey, the other from Iran) and the second one is
pretty expensive (500 g can cost around $200). You'll usually find that
people who are used to tombek have trouble smoking ma'assel, and
vice-versa. sorry 4 the long msg,
cya
I thought the bowl that you use is the one with the big
hole down the center as opposed to the one we use with regular
ma'assel, but I could be wrong.
this is correct. You do that, and then put in the tobacco till into a
mini mountain, so the whole setup looks a bit like an icecream cone
(the bowl being the cone).

you then place coals directly onto the tobacco and smoke away. There is little to no smoke, but a heavy feeling.

you could also use foil if you find it too harsh, and do it as with regular m3assal, but you need a LOT of heat.

I did smoke something like it before. And I do remember it being stacked really weird (very detailed and symetrical) in the bowl. I mean these guys would have a dozen bowls lined up and ready. Man, it looked like works of art. It reminded me of "what if I took a dozen rabbit turds, flattened them on one end and arraged them symetrically around in the bowl, taking my time because I'm warped?" Picture it!
The smoke? Very little smoke density. Smooth? not even close to smooth. Like inhaling hot sand. Not a cool experience. I always thought they fed me Zaghloul, but since Nidal described what he remembers seeing, I now realize for me to have been given Zaghloul instead would have been a blessing!
The funnel bowl is very common with that stuff too. Believe it or not, a nice hotel (the Merridian-pyramids) in cairo used a funnel bowl on me one day loaded with double apple. Awsome, smooth, dense, flavorful smoke. I'm just courious how they loaded the thing for this. hmm.
Not a recomended smoke. Now, I'm thinking about trying Zaghloul. It may be alright.

hi
yeah Mr Bubble mentioned something important about the density -
the smoke is always very light and thin with tombek, but heaps harsh.
The ma'assel we are used to is so thick and cloudy because it is the
sugar and molasses that are burning.

HI guys,Im Sam and im from Australia and i consider myself "THE KING" of argile.
I own about six of them and I have been experimenting in making all
types of heads in every way possible,so I will give my 10 cents worth.

The way i think is good of packing the argile head is by getting the
bowl, make sure you have one not too deep and not too shallow as a
shallow one burns too quick and a deep one,you dont get to smoke all of
the tobacco but with a medium head u get full flavor.

So you get the head and you sprinkle in the tobacco making sure that
you seperate the twigs from the tobacco as the twigs burn the tobacco
more quicker and make sure that you make the tobacco in small pieces
and fill the head just a little bit over the rim of the head. Then get a
long thin skewer and stir the tobacco in the head making sure its
loose.Push the tobacco down and if it goes past the rim then fill a bit
more but if its level with the rim of the head then thats perfect.

Stir it again and make sure its not compressed down and then place the
skewer in the middle and place it down the centre of the head into the
centre hole then stick the skewer from the bottom and push it through
each hole and through the tobacco to make sure you have good air flow.

Then grab the foil and just place it over the tobacco without using any
pressure, just let it sit over the tobacco. Then poke the holes right
around making as many small holes as you can. Then when you have
finished blow the head from undernath and make sure that you have good
air flow. You are now ready to get the best out of your hookah.
