chrjacks
Spotted this article in the local bi-weekly free newspaper in town here in Portland. Makes hookah out to be something dirty. I was also interested about the stat that said one session would equal smoking about 100 cigs.http://www.portlandtribune.com/news/story....549561309981100
Whodat1004
Anybody who has ever smoked a cigarette would realize thats impossible to smoke 100 cigs without wanting to die. Why do we trust the media?
PerznPerversion
that article interpreted the report wrong like most people do. it says the volume of smoke is equivelant to 100 cigerates

buttpintoo
Do they assume each drag equals a full cig?
Hearsay
They assume that each drag equals cancer, certain death, and immorality.
[Elmo]
It doesn't much help the fact that the bar was letting in under aged kids. That's just another way to look poorly upon hookah.

pboyle
They say there is no solid evidence that smoking hookah is better for you than cigarettes. But there is only speculation that its worse.stupid.
KillZedKill
Maybe forum members should organize some kind of action against places that do no prohibit under aged smoking? Maybe we should begin doing something to counter the medias false statistics? Rather then just getting upset and pissed at them, why doesn't anyone conduct their own studies on hookah and reeducate the media? If their are official studies done somewhere that are a bit more positive then the ones the media throws out at people, then maybe we should make an effort to spread those facts out ourselves. If their are official studies done somewhere that are a bit more positive then the ones the media throws out at people, then maybe we should make an effort to spread those facts out ourselves.Maybe, but you have to acknowledge that it is in fact the tobacco industry, so any kind of "positive" reports on anything will just look like an effort to make people start smoking. I think the best way is to just tell the truth about hookah smoking: no, it doesn't contain some of the additives that cigarettes do, but yes, it is still smoke all up in your lungs, which isn't a good thing by any means. As hookah smokers we all know of the dangers of smoking, but its a choice that we make and that others may (and most likely will) look down upon. I agree that any hookah shop should discourage underage smoking and I think some people are just giving the media more reason to bash hookah shops by not enforcing age laws. But I'm not sure there is too much we can do, other than lead by example. I try not to make people smoke hookah who don't smoke already, because I don't want them to develop any bad habits from my pressuring them. I've always viewed hookah as kind of an "alternative" to cigarette smoking, even though I never, ever smoke cigarettes. Its still smoking, but perhaps a little safer (which is what the debate is all about, just my opinion) and it tastes a whole heck of a lot better than cigarettes. But all of this is just opinion. No hard facts here.
Sonthert
Actually its not smoke, its vapor. And, according to the Surgeon General's older reports, smoking a pipe is safer than smoking cigarettes. Smoking a pipe doesn't increase your mortality rate compared to non-smokers. How could that be if tobacco is the killer? It would have to mean there is some fundamental difference between cigarettes and pipe tobacco...and pipe tobacco is taking the gaff for cigarettes having tobacco in them.
