RoDenT
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a plated brass stem like the egyptian hookah on hookahcompany.com (Product# Eg17) and a copper stem like the syrian hookah there (Product# Sy12)? Is one stem better than the other as far as maintenance goes?
Stew
it's a tube straight through on both. Cleaning will be about the same. The difference is in the style though. Personally I like Egyptian design better but if there's one you like better than the other, go for it!
John Deere
Mine is silver on the outside, but the actual inside of the stem is brass and it gets really green 1 day after i clean it. You may want to check out what kind of metal the pipe that goes from the head to the base is, and avoid copper and brass, since they get gross. Im thinking it might be some kind of chemical reation with the smoke. Im not sure yet.
cypress
There are some stemes that are made out of stainless steel. Be careful though because even though some may advertise stainless it might not be stainless steel. They are refereing to stainless as it does not tarnish on the outside in which it is chrome over brass. If you want help searching for a stainless steel one i am sure other and me could do a search from the links that we have stored to help you find one you might like. Its just a matter of preference though. Some like traditional, some like more modern.
NERV
i've got a brass hookah with what i believe is a copper stem and havent had any problems, as long it doesnt get to hot its fine, just make sure to use a clay bowl on top, i would imagine a metal bowl could transfer too much heat to the stem, but as stated its basicly prefrence of design
