ghostofdavid
Any of you toy with Linux a whole lot and have any recommendations for someone familiar enough with DOS to handle command lines (yes, I know the commands are different but the concepts are the same, right?) but who loves GUI. I've played with Ubantu a bit but on another computer. Any recommendations for sites or books to read up on it?

ghostofdavid
I can't afford a Mac! The same specs of a $1100 Mac, I could pick up on a PC for $399-499. They aren't that much different these days anyway, are they? Apart from the OS, I mean. After all, new Macs have Intel Dual Cores similar to PCs, right? oggie505#2
u can get an older iBook, for a good price on ebay. They are similar between Mac OS and Vista, but mac is more stable, but u still have unix command in makes for some programs u download. but yes new ones are expensive, the parts a becomeing similar, but they way the kernels are done is what makes them different. Mac used to use motorola chips
OPR234
As soon as OS X 10.5 comes out this October, you should be able to build a computer that will run it pretty easily. People have already been doing it with pirated versions of OS X 10.5, so with a little research it shouldnt be a problem to do it legally when its released. The only hardware that might be a problem is a video card, i dont know if it still matters with the switch to intel , but finding a decent video card for a mac for a decent price was near impossible on the old PPC macs. john_smith
If you are looking to find out good guides about UNIX commands do a search on digg.com, there are tonnes of articles on there about it.
