Temporary hose grommet

Recommended Posts

How can a person make a temorary hose grommet? My friend had a grommet
go missing and he has been down to one hose since. We tried electrical
tape but that didn't work for very long. If anyone has had experience
with bodging up a grommet, would you care to share how you did it?

exactly, this also works for replacing a grommet for the bowl and the
hose. We paper towel, drench the water out so its damp, tear a narrow
strip and wrap it around the stem our hose and just twist it in. Can't
reuse it like a grommet but doesn't take long at all to do.

Stew, I just thought I would give you a good idea. What you need to do, is get some sort of rubber gasket for something, and place the ring where the grommet would be. You slide the hose into the spot, bringing with it the gasket. After that, all is airtight. Also, with Leon's hose, it might just be botched all together. I personally believe that it has a leak or two. Stupid Ugly Graeme might have something to do with that.

The leaks are everywhere around the stem, not in the hose. He simply
bought a cheaper pipe. Caught me off guard to read your post though
man. Stupid Ugly Graeme sort of was the give-away.

Aluminum oil works aswell. Rip off a strip of foil about 1 inche thick, then fold it in half. Then wrap it around the tip of the hose and plug it in while twisting it....the direction you twist it depend son the way you wraped the foil around the hose...youll se what I mean if you try it..this works well, creates a tight seal and the hose will stay pretty solid untill youre done, and you could resuse ths strip a few times...this would work for a bowl also, you would just need alot more foil for a bowl though.

entrailsgalore, wow, that's someone we haven't heard from in a while! How ya doing?
Your imagination is the limit. I've seen the shisha boys in Egypt (my life dream) use small strips of cloth, wetted down, like the paper towl thing. I personally used to use (and still do sometimes) a small strip of thin cardboard, like from a tobacco box, or cigarette box. Just wet it down with your tongue, wrap it around whatever, and plug in and twist.  As far as the rest of the leaky parts on the shaft, use some GE clear silicone sealant. Need to let dry for a few hours, but works great and being the clear type, hard to see.
As far as a leaky hose (the hose itsself) goes, they're not too many out there that are actually air-tight. Lot's of hose advice on this board.

just to let you know, the adhesive on electrical tape is extremely
carcinogenic, it says so right on the package. Your not even really
supposed to touch it without gloves, or washing your hands thouroghly
afterward. I counter-advise the use of it, except for on wires.

You must do alot of research or have done so as to what stuff are
carcinogens. To be honest I never think about those things because I
feel that I would be trapped as to what I can and cant do.  To be
honest I cant wear gloves for every carcinogens I come in contact with.
I have tried working on my car woth gloves and it just doesnt work out.
Especially if i rebuild a carburator. I dont do any of those for a
living I just dont trust anyone else to do anything for me.  I am
not trying to rag on you or anything but I am giving you props for
pointing out this to other members who are more conscience about it.

Sorry guys. I just thought that I might point out that the leaks are around the stem right? All we have to do it a bit of electrical solder. You need to preheat the stem with a torch, and then let loose with the solder. Please keep it clean and tidy, and make sure there are no drips. Clean the entire thing with hot water after it has cooled. And I do mean hot water. This is an extremely cheap fix, and will last a lifetime if you know what you are doing. Anyone who needs good directions on soldering a stem, let me know, and I will start up a new topic about it.
