polar icey smoke

Recommended Posts

So you know those things that you can buy for your hookah that cost
however much, like 20 bucks or so? I think they're called ice holders
or something of the like...the dealies that connect somewhere around
where your ash catcher lives that you can load up with ice. Well the
other day when I was smoking some sara double apple (thanks to mushrat)
my friends and I were thinking man it would be nice to have a little
bit of a cooler smoke...that, and I didn't want to fry my hand off when
taking off the bowl at the end of the night...well I got this brilliant
idea that maybe I can cool things off even more (we had ice in the base
already). So being a bit ...odd... I jumped up and grabbed about 4 ice
cubes or so from the freezer bin ice maker thing and put them on the
ash catcher kind of close to the bowl (but not too close to the hole in
the ash catcher...that would lead to wet hookah very fast). The very
next hit we took was like freezing! Honestly, the smoke was like
breathing dry ice vapor. It was pretty sweet. I'd recommend everybody
try it one time if they're too ghetto to get an ice bin thing for their
hookah like me...but now I'm seriously thinking about getting one! It
was like a night and day effect versus ice in the base. Anyway only
disadvantage was a wet hookah after about 15 or so minutes...but I
always put a placemat or many paper towels under it anyway, so it was
very worth the experiment.

but yeah about the bowl getting really hot when changing the bowl
before the coal is done...well it's bittersweet but I cracked the side
of my bowl off on accident...so I'm thinking about getting one of those
really tall bowls so it's grab-able from the bottom without getting
really really hot in your hand. sooooo motivation to get it sooner than
later, I suppose! anyway yeah putting ice just below your bowl makes a
world of a difference.

From my buddy at school who actually has an ice chamber, which is right
below the tray and in direct contact with the stem, he said he couldn't
really notice a big difference. Similarly, putting ice in the chamber
doesnt really make a difference to me. The only time I can notice a
difference in heat is when I'm smoking outside and the hookah's chamber
is in the suns rays. But thats about it.

I'm still gunna try this new-fangled idea of yours, but since I
regularly shake the coals on my tray, this could be a problem. I
typically pick up the coals and drop them on the tray repeately until
they are "ashed", so the melted water in the tray could be trouble.

On a similar note regarding getting the smoke cooler, I rigged up my
own little contraption that I think I posted a while back. It worked
pretty damn well for putting it togeather in 30 minutes.

The clear hose you see there is the hose you would normally pull on. It
goes into the hose nossel of the hookah. That clear hose goes into a
hole I cut out into a plastic container I had laying around the house.
It goes into the hole and into the second chamber of water, just an
inch below the water level as you would normally do.

The nice thing about this large container, you can load half the thing full of ice and water, and get a very nice chilled smoke.

Then there is a second hold where the black hose is. It doesn't go into
the hole, just on the top of it. As you can see, I used regular
grommets to make the holes air-tight.

This might be another way you might try getting chilled smoke. In the
picture, it was just a test run so I didn't fill it up with ice. And
don't worry, you might think that all that extra water and hose to go
through that it might be hard to pull on. When I did it, the resistance
was just the same as if I was just using the hookah alone, and its
kinda fun to see the smoke go through a second chamer ;)

Good luck on your Quest for Coolness!

Yashman -

I cant wait to try your idea.  Im going to the hardware store and
tobacconist right after work today - even though I just put in a $60
order online a few days ago, I need my fix!  Just a couple of
questions for you: how big was the second chamber you added? how did
you make sure it was airtight? and what size tubing did you use (and
should I be worried about heating plastic)? Thanks!

The second chamber is roughly the size of a 1gallon milk jug I believe.
Its a ly-chee jelly plastic container we had laying around that we got
from the asian market. You know, those little jellows in a cup with a
piece of fruit in the middle?

As for the holes in the top. I drilled out little holes with a drill,
the hallowed them out with scissors. Just kept making them larger and
larger until they were the size I wanted. Then I used one large head
grommet for the tube that wen't inside the chamber, and one small hose
grmmet for the hose that just sites on top. When you use the grommets,
it makes it pretty airtight.

As for the tubing, the label says 1/2" outside diameter. I got this
from home depot for 2.99 for 10'. And no, you don't have to worry about
heating up the tube. One, because theres no heat reaching the tube (we
had this disscussion before), and two, if you look at home depots label
on the tubing, it says this tube can be used for refridgerators, food
and drink (for what I don't know), and it says it is non-toxic and
passed Govt regulations.

Let us know if it works ;)

I did it!  Thanks for the help Yashman.  I couldnt find grommets, so I ended up just epoxying the seals and teflon tape for the jar lid.  Heres some pics

Wow! You did a bang up job! The only thing I noticed with mine is, that
you need to fill the water pretty high. Cause when the lvl is low, the
chamber holds too much smoke and it sort of just sits their. Don't know
if this is the REAL reason, but with all that smoke, it would get harsh
after a while. Not a burning harshess, but just SO much smoke.

I think if you just fill the water pretty high, to the point where the
smoke =s the smoke in the hookahs chamber, it should be fine.

Don't know where mine went. I think I lost it while moving from my dorm back home :( Might have to rig up another one.

Now your gunna have to give us a report on how it performs!
Yashman, do I spy a DORM ROOM?

Hahaha no worries I was there too.
Yup, that was my sophmore year. Our rooms came with tile, but for
comfort reasons I brought in a section of carpet..like what I've done
with it with the hookah? Yeah we just threw that in the garbage at the
end of the year ;)

But this coming year, I'll be living it up in on campus apartments,
still doing the damn thing of course! ALTHOUGH, I have 2 new roommates
that I've never met before. God damn I hope they don't mind hookah...
If not, I have my own room I can use, but its just not the same as the
living room where I can entertain. You could only fit like 3 others
comfortably in my little room...

Crossing my fingers..

Homemade ice chamber performance report:

The chamber smokes well, the smoke is noticably cooler and
smoother.  The draw is a little harder, which Im guessing is
becuase of the amount of water in the external chamber.  It seemed
like the bowl smoked a little faster than usual, which might have been
due to the second chamber, plus the fact that since the smoke was so
much cooler I could inhale a lot more.

I really like this feature and would recommend it to everyone.  It
didnt take more than an hour to make, most of which was waiting for the
epoxy to set.

Materials
4' 1/2" outside diameter tubing - $0.78
roll of duct tape - $4.99
roll of teflon tape - $0.97
tube of 5 min. epoxy - $2.97
plastic jar - $free

total cost = $9.71

Now I just gotta wait til my Al-Amir and Al-Fahker gets here.... its so close - I keep checking the UPS tracking

hahaha holy crap! Sorry I've been out...soooo much going on
recently...I almost finished my friend's album in this amount of time.
Amazing the topic took off...half-expected everybody to tell me I was
an idiot for putting ice in my tray haha but props to yashman for
running with the idea...I'm going to have to try that with my friend,
no doubt about it (as soon as I get a new bowl since I broke mine...)
So you said you wanted a picture? I don't have my camera at the moment
but if my friends come over soon I'll be sure to have them take a pic
of it...all I did was take ice cubes and stick them on the tray, pretty
close to the pipe. It cooled the pipe a lot since my hookah is mostly
metal, and I guess it in turn made the smoke freezing. Does that huge
contraption have a similar effect with freezing smoke?

 • 11 months later...
The only reason why you'd want to add salt is if you are having a problem with the water freezing. Putting salt in the water makes it so that the water freezes at a lower temperature. So normally, the coldest you could get water without it turning to a giant block of ice is about 32 degrees, but with salty water, you can get it quite a bit colder before that happens. The only thing is that it is hard to get water to 32 degrees with just ice, anyway. And DONT use dry ice, haha.
