A Mix Question.....

Recommended Posts

Okay, I keep hearing people say they have a little of this and a little of that lying around. So you decide to layer them in the bowl. Is there a rule of thumb for doing so? The flavor you want stronger on top? Or on bottom? Mixed up all together before being put in the bowl? Ideas? Suggestions? We all have flavors we're not too crazy about. Some I've given away. Some I'd like to try mixing. But I'd like some general guidelines about the hows and whys.....

when i mix i put the more dominant flavor/the flavor i want less of on the bottom, and the weaker/more wanted flavor on top. sometimes i will do like a split down the middle with the more preferred flavor having a layer on top. mixing in a phunnel bowl i just put it in different areas.

i mix everything together in a bowl then pack it.

layering is not needed because you put less of the stronger flavors and more of the lighters.

for example, blueberry mint, you only use a pinch of mint and the rest blueberry.

When I mix it is usually in the phunnel in which case I randomly fill spots with different tobaccos. If I were to mix in a standard bowl I tend to try to pack it pretty even. Meaning instead of layering it I try to mix all the tobacco in the bowl evenly. Kind of like a salad.

mixing can be done either way depending on your desired result. for something like a strawberry pineapple you want to taste both at the same time, so you would mix the shisha together and then dump it in the bowl blended. sometimes you want the flavors to fade in and out, say like a vanilla and capp. mix with a pinch of rose. in that case you would put the rose as a small pile in the center of the bowl, and then put the vanilla capp blend around and over the rose. heat managed normally, you would burn the vanilla capp as you moved the coals around the outside, then when you moved it to the center later on in the smoke it would burn through the short layer of vanilla capp into the rose. keep in mind this is a regular bowl, not a funnel. We refer to them as spun or thrown. The flavors as ruling or subject. Ruling being the primary flavor, subject being the secondary flavor (or tertiary flavor or quaternary flavor, etc.). Spun is where you take the appropriate amounts of each tobacco and mix them together, before putting them in the bowl. It tends to waste the most tobacco. Thrown is where you put them in the bowl together. I usually keep the bottom layer pure with the flavor I want to rule, then I mottle the top half of the bowl with the flavor I want to be subject (s). If the mix is roughly 50/50, i just intersperse equal "fingers" of the two flavors in the bowl. I don't recommend just making one half the bowl 'A' and the other half 'B'. When A cashes out early, half the bowl is always going to want to burn. If you take an extra minute, even though one flavor has become utterly useless, the bowl will still be smokable.

How about stacking Basil leafs with layers of Tangiers Horchata? I did this once with Strawberry Nakhla and it wasn't to bad. I'm temping to do the same with Horchata. first layer of Horchata, then basil, then horchata on top...hmmm
