lightphinx
I was lighting up a quick swift light coal and placed it on the aluminum screen (diamond brand) and I know the sulpher smell when I light the coal. But then as it burned, it gave off an ammonium gas smell, and i couldn't tell if it was from the burnning aluminum foil, or the coal itself. I'm concerened because it smells bad, like hair perming products. Any suggestions on how to make my hookah more healthier?Would it be better to have glass screens? Does foil have any ill effects? I've heard different studies, but i don't know if they're just rummors or if they are true. Thanks
SomaliSmoke
I think the amount of exposer is key, standing their inhaling is probably not recommended. But i can't see the occasional moving of the coals and you being near it having THAT much of an effect.
lightphinx
Hmm... maybe i should stick to natural coals that take longer to burn that's without the harsh chemicals.

Espically if your smoking with firends and you have to wait for the rope to come around.
Brownman18
they arent too bad.. light em up for 3 mins i usually do that while the xbox is gettin set up or the bowls packed.. once the session starts you just keep adding coals to the hot plate every 45 mins or so so your never without coals.. HookahCulture
Overall when using quick-lights, let them sit a few minutes and them blow them red (get rid of all black) while holding them with your tongs before putting them on the hookah. Gotta burn off all the impurities!I recommend the 3 Kings brand for quick-lights though.Avoid the brand with the red box and the minarets - they're Syrian and HORRIBLE because they don't light easily, they burn quickly, and taste like sucking a tailpipe. Espically if your smoking with firends and you have to wait for the rope to come around. Not only that, but they don't produce as much heat as quicklights so you need more (NOT economical if that's your thing), and they all seem to ash more and a finer ash that's more likely to be sucked down the pipe. I'll stick to quicklights.'Rani
OPR234
I've noticed this smell from other quicklights, after I left them open for a while. Just a guess, but I think this is what happens when they get the chance to absorb some moisture from the air.
HookahCulture
Finger coals make a LOT of heat!Start two bars on the bowl and see! When using finger coals, make sure they're coated white on all sides before serving. In fact, two fingers across a metal screen works perfectly for dense and flavorful smoke. If you inhale constantly and often, you WILL start burning the mahsell, but if you just be mellow, it'll be good.Ash being sucked down the pipe (you mean into the bowl?) has no effect because it's minimal, and by this time the top layer of the mahsell is already cooked. If you just let the hookah sit, it will behave itself. Hookahs can be fussy, and messing with the coals often ruins the smoke. Just let it be!
